According to a press release from BOOM! Studios, a small-screen adaptation of the popular, groundbreaking Lumberjanes series will be released for streaming on HBO Max.
The series will be headed by She-Ra and the Princesses of Power showrunner and creator Noelle Stevenson, and HBO Max has secured a script-to-series order, with plans to launch the series with a one-hour special written and directed by Stevenson.
In 2014, Stevenson co-created the ongoing Lumberjanes comic series with co-creators Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, and Brooklyn Allen. After a run of more than seventy issues, that series will be concluding in December 2020.

The third entry in the Lumberjanes original graphic novel series by Lilah Sturges and polterink, True Colors, will be released on October 20th, 2020, and the first two entries in that series are available now.
And if you’re interested in checking out some of the nonfiction historical figures who inspired the heroes of Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types, the Encyclopedia Lumberjanica: An Illustrated Guide to the Hardcore Lady-Types of Lumberjanes will be released on November 3rd, 2020.
And as for HBO Max, Lumberjanes is the latest comics-inspired acquisition for the streaming service, which will be offering several series based on the DC Universe, some of which you may have heard about at one point or another.
And Lumberjanes is only the most recent adaptation sold by BOOM! Studios: a six-episode adaptation of R.L. Stine’s Just Beyond is headed to Disney+, and an adaptation of the graphic novel Snow Blind starring and produced by Jake Gyllenhaal was acquired by Apple in a bidding war amidst six parties.

Studios’ Eisner Award-winning graphic novelsLUMBERJANES as an animated series, with SHE-RA AND THE PRINCESSES OF POWER creator and showrunner Noelle Stevenson set to adapt and executive produce. The graphic novels follow five friends– April, Jo, Mal, Molly, and Ripley—during their first summer at Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thilstle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types. These new cabinmates soon discover that there’s more to this camp than earning badges, and that their camp director is harboring a secret that is the key to answering a mystery as old as the camp itself. Throughout their summer these hardcore lady types will have to overcome obstacles involving supernatural creatures and cabin rivalries, proving that some campfire stories are real and also learning the true meaning of friendship.
The LUMBERJANES graphic novel series, co-created by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Noelle Stevenson, and Brooklyn Allen, has sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide since launching in 2014. Lumberjanes has run for over 70 issues and 13 graphic novels, won multiple Eisner Awards including the award for Best New Series, won the GLAAD award for Outstanding Comic Book. Abrams Books has also published a tie-in series of young adult prose novels written by Mariko Tamaki.
Ross Richie and Stephen Christy will Executive Produce the series for BOOM! Studios. BOOM!’s Mette Norkjaer will Co-Executive Produce along withLUMBERJANES co-creators Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, and Brooklyn Allen. The project was brought into HBO Max by Billy Wee and Aaron Davidson, both of whom will oversee the project for the streamer.
Noelle Stevenson is coming off of creating and showrunning 52 episodes of SHE-RA AND THE PRINCESSES OF POWER for Netflix and Dreamworks Animation, where her work received Emmy Award and GLAAD Award nominations. As a New York Times bestselling author, she co-created LUMBERJANES and wrote and illustrated the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel NIMONA, which is being adapted as an animated feature by Disney’s Blue Sky Animation division and will be released in 2022. In March 2020 HarperTeen released her most recent graphic novel, The Fire Never Goes Out: A Memoir in Pictures.
BOOM! Studios, which controls the largest library of comic book and graphic novel IP outside of Marvel and DC Comics, is coming off of selling the adaptation of their graphic novel SNOW BLIND to Apple in a six-way bidding war, with Jake Gyllenhall attached to star and produce. In May, Disney+ announced an 8-episode straight-to-series adaptation of R.L. Stine’s graphic novel series JUST BEYOND to be written by Seth Grahame-Smith. In April, the company signed a first-look television deal with Netflix for both live action and animated TV adaptations of titles from their IP library.
