In December 2020, the ongoing Lumberjanes comic series will conclude with End of Summer #1, an oversized issue that will see the Hardcore Lady Types facing off against the Grey in a climactic final chapter. It marks the end of a groundbreaking, best-selling series that in many ways defined Boom’s publishing output – although it is far from the end of the franchise.

Lumberjanes: End of Summer #1 will feature the talents of cartoonist Kat Leyh, co-creator and co-writer Shannon Watters, artists Kanesha C. Bryant and Alexa Bosy, as well as returning co-creator and series artist Brooklyn Allen. Not to mention variant covers by Harriet Moulton and Tillie Walden!

Lumberjanes began in 2014, when it was launched by BOOM! Studios’ BOOM! Box imprint. Series co-creators Watters, Allen, Grace Ellis, and Noelle Stevenson originally planned the story as a limited run, but the breakout popularity lead to an ongoing series and several spinoffs, including novels and a planned film.

But it’s not the end of Lumberjanes. BOOM! Studios Executive Editor Jeanine Schaefer made it clear that while this may be the end of the ongoing Lumberjanes story, it isn’t the end of the ‘Janes, and fans should stay tuned for announcements about future adventures.

In the mean time, there is still more Lumberjanes on the way!

On October 20th, 2020 Lumberjanes: True Colors, the third original graphic novel by Lilah Sturges and polterink will be published.

And on November 3rd, 2020, you’ll be able to get your hands on the Encyclopedia Lumberjanica: An Illustrated Guide to the Hardcore Lady-Types of Lumberjanes, a nonfiction book featuring many of the women throughout history who inspired the Lumberjanes, along with commentary from the characters themselves.

Here’s the full text of the press release about Lumberjanes: End of Summer #1, including some juicy details about the plot of the conclusive chapter.

BOOM! Studios Announces LUMBERJANES Series Finale in December 2020

“The heady feel of camp nostalgia with solid story-telling and wonderful art.”—The Mary Sue

“Really just a pleasure to read.”—School Library Journal

LOS ANGELES, CA (September 16, 2020) LUMBERJANES, the landmark Eisner and GLAAD award-winning series, will wrap its historic six year run in December 2020, announced BOOM! Studios today. LUMBERJANES: END OF SUMMER #1, from cartoonist Kat Leyh (Snapdragon), co-writer and co-creator Shannon Watters, artists Kanesha C. Bryant (Encyclopedia Lumberjanica) and Alexa Bosy (Lumberjanes: Somewhere That’s Green #1), as well as returning co-creator and series artist Brooklyn Allen, concludes the series in a special oversized issue.

In the final chapter of the “End of Summer” epic event, the brave campers and counselors of Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types are in the fight of their lives against the mysterious force known as the Grey. Molly has discovered a deep and ancient forest magic which she hopes to use to protect her friends and the home they’ve all found at camp. But will she be strong enough to save everyone in the camp and the forest? Or is the all-encompassing, all-erasing Grey just too powerful for anyone to stop?

“When we announced ‘End of Summer’, we knew it would be the conclusion of a journey full of friendship, wonder, and fun for the Lumberjanes and for those of us who have wandered into the forest alongside them. We’re so happy that so many readers, young and old, have found joy and adventure whenever they sat down to a new story with Jo, Mal, Ripley, April, Molly, and all the other beloved characters we’ve grown to love throughout the years,” said Jeanine Schaefer, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “While this is the end of the Lumberjanes monthly comic book series for now, it’s not the end of the ‘Janes and new adventures, so stay tuned for more exciting news to come.”

Launched in 2014 under BOOM! Studios’ YA-focused BOOM! Box imprint by series co-creators Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Noelle Stevenson and Brooklyn Allen, Lumberjanes was originally solicited as a limited series, but the overwhelming response from fans transformed it into an ongoing series that has become a New York Times best-seller, earned numerous nominations for prestigious awards including the GLAAD Media Award and the Eisner Awards (which it has won twice), and have even crossed over with heroes from the DC Comics Universe (in Lumberjanes/Gotham Academy). The Lumberjanes have expanded to middle-grade novels published by Amulet Books and a diverse array of merchandise from pins to patches.

  1. As a 36 year old dude, I feel like I have no business liking Lumberjanes as much as I do. (Is this what it’s like to be a Brony?) Bummer to see it end as an ongoing, although I’m sure it’ll shift to a Graphic Novel format, since that’s where the money is for the segment of the market that Lumberjanes is really intended for.
