It’s no exaggeration to say that superstar comic creator Jeff Lemire is keeping himself busy. After announcing the upcoming Mazebook limited series from Dark Horse last week, details were revealed for Primordial, a new 6-issue limited series from Image that will reunite him with frequent collaborator Andrea Sorrentino.

Lemire and Sorrentino have collaborated together on various acclaimed comic projects in the past including Green Arrow for DC Comics, Old Man Logan for Marvel, and most notably Gideon Falls their Eisner-award winning creator owned series. Dave Stewart is also once again joining as colorist, with Gideon Falls letterer Steve Wands rounding out the team.

Described as “2001: A Space Odyssey meets We3,” Primordial revisits the Space Race and reimagines what really happened to Able and Baker, the first primates sent into space.

Primordial

Green Arrow, Old Man Logan, and Eisner Award winning Gideon Falls’ creative team Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth) and artist Andrea Sorrentino will reunite for an all-new, upcoming six issue miniseries titled, Primordial. This mind-bending sci-fi/Cold War thriller mashup will launch from Image Comics this September.

“Andrea and I were keen for our next collaboration after the success of Gideon Falls, but we also didn’t want to repeat ourselves,” said Lemire in an exclusive on the announcement with Space.com. “I think with Primordial we are trying something totally new and different for us. This book is part Cold War thriller and part deep space sci-fi, but all grounded in an alt-history take on the first animals sent to space. This book is full of mystery, adventure and intrigue and Andrea and I have both tried to push ourselves into new story telling territory.”

Primordial reveals to readers that In 1957, the USSR launched the dog, Laika, into Earth’s orbit. Two years later, the USA responded with two monkeys, Able and Baker. These animals never returned. But, unbeknownst to everyone, they did not die in orbit…they were taken. And now they are coming home.

Sorrentino added: “I was totally in love with Primordial from the first time I read the pitch Jeff sent me. It’s thrilling, it’s noir, it’s moving and it’s full of heart. It’s also weird and crazy and it’s pushing me to new, exciting art approaches. Can’t wait for readers to have the first issue in their hands in September.”

This upcoming high-intensity story is perhaps best described as 2001: A Space Odyssey meets We3.
