The Disney+ Marvel news keeps coming. Two weeks ago news broke that Orphan Black‘s Tatiana Maslany has been cast as She-Hulk, and last week it was announced that Samuel L. Jackson will return as Nick Fury for his own solo series. Now Deadline is reporting that actress Iman Vellani has been cast as Kamala Khan, the title character of the forthcoming Ms. Marvel series.

Iman Vellani is such a newcomer that as of this writing she doesn’t even have an IMDB page yet. According to Deadline, though, the actress was a part of the Next Wave committee for the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. Being cast in the lead role of a Marvel project is a huge first job.

Introduced in 2014, the current iteration of Ms. Marvel is the highest-profile Muslim superhero in comics. A Pakistani-American, Kamala Khan is an Inhuman who developed shape-changing abilities after exposure to the Terrigen Mists. Where the TV version of Kamala will have the same origin is somewhat up in the air, especially considering the general poor reception for Marvel’s Inhumans TV series. Considering that was produced by a different division of the studio, though, it seems like Ms. Marvel could easily be used for a soft Inhumans reboot.

No production start date has yet been announced for Ms. Marvel, but congratulations are certainly in order for Vellani on her casting. The first Disney+ Marvel series, WandaVision, is set to debut later this year on the streaming service.
