Last month, Image Comics rocked the industry when the imprint announced the immanent return of heavy hitter series Nowhere Men, with a new arc set to debut in January after a nearly two year hiatus. In their February solicitations, released today, the company teases a new arc of fan-favorite Bitch Planet and the conclusions to several new titles’ first arcs, including those of Paper Girls and I Hate Fairyland. Let’s dive in, shall we?
Get ready to be Non-Compliant once more…
After a long hiatus between the penultimate and final issues of Bitch Planet‘s first arc, writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Valentine de Landro appear taking steps to right the ship. They’ll be launching the new arc to the series in February, exciting non-compliants around the world. Here’s hoping they can keep to a more regular schedule this arc!

FEBRUARY 3 / 40 PAGES / FC / M / $3.99NEW STORY ARC

We’re enamored with I Hate Fairyland
Skottie Young‘s irreverent not-so-all-ages fantasy deconstruction made a splash when it launched in October. With 52,000+ copies sold according to ICv2, the first issue of I Hate Fairyland positioned at a respectable #42 in the sales charts. In February, the series will conclude its first arc. The key that was supposed to take Gert back to the real world 27 years ago has been found, but will she be the one holding it when the door opens?
I HATE FAIRYLAND #5

Paper Girls reaches the end of its first arc
Paper Girls #1 debuted with a stellar 75,000+ sales when it launched at the beginning of October, placing #22 in the ICv2 chart. While the launch numbers may have been cannibalized by the flood of All-New, All-Different Marvel first issues that dominated the sales figures, there is no denying that the combination of Brian K. Vaughan (Saga, Y: the Last Man), Cliff Chiang (Wonder Woman, Neil Young’s Greendale), and Matt Wilson (The Wicked + The Divine, Wonder Woman) commands intense respect among fans. With only two issues out thus far, the team’s collaboration has already borne great fruit, defying genres and expectations.

There is a complex, empathetic sort of quality to that world and you feel rather at home in it.”—Kate Beaton, Hark! A Vagrant

OOO, a Jahlil Okaford statue
Hmmm. While I admire the decent sales of Paper Girls as an indie title, you have to remember, these are numbers sold to reatilers, not final sales to the general public. While Vaughn and Chiang’s names have gotten the book a good start, I would have to say that it was recieved enthusiastically at first, but the second issue sales were pretty rough. After actually reading them, I have to say that many of the sales of this book were to retailers, with fans starting to let it go. Unitl Image starts to utilize editors in a greater capacity, a lot of half baked books are going to hit the stands as the next big thing, only to come down to earth when people actually read them and respond.
@ V Wiley
Where do you get the sales numbers for issue two? Last sales data available are for October, and that’s when the first issue has been published. We are still in the middle of November so sales data for this month doesn’t even exist at this point. That said, second issues are pre ordered before the first has been sold to customers, and the first issue that is ordered by retailers with some first hand data is usually the third, that better reflects how many copies of the first issues has been actually sold to readers.
@ V Wiley
Also: ‘decent sales for an indie title’ ? Avengers #0 sold 4.000 thousands issues more than PG, Batman & Robin Eternal 1 sold at the same level, New Avengers 1 sold less, Karnak 1 by Ellis and Zaffino sold less and the same is true for many others Marvel relaunches out in October.
