Even with the continued uncertainty regarding the reopening of theaters this summer, Marvel Studios seems adamant to maintain the May 7, 2021 release date for Black Widow and dismissing the potential of streaming it through the Disney+ platform. We’ll have to wait and see what happens in two months. In any case, expect Black Widow tie-in merchandise to rev up once more as we get closer to release.
In fact, today Hasbro announced Marvel Legends Series 6-inch Red Guardian and Melina Vostokoff Figure 2-Pack played by David Harbour and Rachel Weisz respectively in the film.
In the comics Melina Vostokoff is the Russian supervillain known as Iron Maid with a deep hatred for Natasha Romanoff. In the Black Widow film, Vostokoff is reinterpreted as a seasoned spy trained in the Red Room as a Black Widow and a mother-figure to Romanoff and Belova who is involved in a scientific experiment.
While many of taken on the Red Guardian moniker in the pages of Marvel comics, this version is Alexei Shostakov who in the comics was the husband of Natasha. Essentially the Russian super-soldier counterpart to Captain America, Shostakov has also been reimagined for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to an interview with TheWrap Harbour described the character as “a bit of a fatherly figure” to Romanoff, and that he “has tons of cracks all over him. And he’s not the heroic, noble man that [people] want him to be. He both comically and tragically has a lot of flaws”
