2019 has really been the year of Jeremy Renner as the internet’s punching bag. Between a pretty embarrassing haircut/man-pain storyline in Avengers: Endgame, his forthcoming album, and the Rennpocalypse itself, it’s tough days in Renner-land. But fear not, Rennheads! Hope is on the way, and it comes in the form of the upcoming Disney series Hawkeye, which will center on the teaming of his Clint Barton with a new superhero archer by the name of Kate Bishop aka the better Hawkeye. And it looks like Marvel Studios has figured out a perfect way to a possibly iffy proposition into a must-see: enlisting Hailee Steinfeld for the role.
Per Variety, the studio has offered the Bumblebee/Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse star the role and if she were to accept, it would wrap the actress, whose career is on a recent upshot after the above critically acclaimed December tentpole two-some last year, into the auspices of the MCU. She’ll have work for years on end, as these series have already been confirmed to have a direct effect on the films they’ll be preceding (such as WandaVision‘s ties to the upcoming Doctor Strange: Into the Multiverse of Madness). Also did any of you see The Edge of Seventeen? That was so great.
Steinfeld is currently starring in the upcoming Apple streaming series Dickinson, where she portrays the famed poet Emily Dickinson, and was an Oscar nominee in her early teens as the lead of the Coen Brothers’ True Grit. It’s a real coup for Marvel in an ongoing list of them, really. But when you’re the biggest franchise in history, these things can’t be surprising anymore.
Kate Bishop, created by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung, is best-known for her role in Matt Fraction and David Aja‘s masterful Hawkeye series, where she not only partnered side-by-side with Clint Barton, she also got her own LA sojourn heavily inspired by The Long Goodbye right smack dab in the middle of the series. She’s also a notable Young Avenger, and this could very well give-way to such a spinoff. With Marvel these days, nothing is off the table….except Spider-Man….and another Hulk movie probably.
Hawkeye joins a line-up of Disney+ streamers that kick off next year, and continue into subsequent years, with The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel. What a time to be alive!
