Animation distributor GKIDS announced on Thursday that it’s acquired the NA rights to Promare, Studio Trigger’s first feature film. Previously, GKIDS has worked with well-known properties such as Cartoon Saloon’s The Breadwinner and Song of the Sea and even Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli collection.

Studio Trigger is well known for its huge action and nearly unbelievable premises including sentient fighting outfits, sexy mechs and teenage space officers. In an interview, founder Imaishi said, to no one’s surprise, “I’ve always liked stuff that’s screwy, exciting, just a little warped, a little excessive.”
Promare is a coming of age story directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill) and written by Kazuki Nakashima (Re: Cutie Honey, Gurren Lagann). Galo Thymos, the movie’s main character, can expect more than a few twists along the way. 30 years ago, half of Galo’s world was destroyed by a group of mutants who could control fire. Now, he finds himself caught in a struggle between the old mutants and the new.
Notably, this film takes a step away from Trigger’s standard hand drawn approach, opting for CG in backgrounds and action scenes. It’s a style becoming more and more popular as it develops and the studio isn’t ignoring that. Imaishi is exciting to push the envelope, saying that “tt’s something I’ve wanted to try for a long time. I’ve done a lot of hand-drawn action up to now, to the point where I’m satisfied, where I can’t think of much new to do. But with CG, I could find new things to try.”
From what’s available on the movie, Imaishi and his team are staying true to their stylish, high octane roots and balancing that with this new approach. Promare hits theaters for a limited run on September 17 and 19 and comes to select locations on the 20. Gear up and check out the trailer below.
