BOOM! Studios has announced Firefly: Blue Sun Rising #0, a special issue that will kick off the first-ever Firefly crossover comic event, will be released in September 2020.

Firefly: Blue Sun Rising is by Greg Pak and Dan McDaid, the current creative team on BOOM!’s ongoing Firefly series. In addition to Firefly: Blue Sun Rising #0, September 2020 will also see the release of Firefly #20, which will include an event prelude. The event will take place in Firefly #21 – 24, with the crossover’s conclusion taking place in Firefly: Blue Sun Rising #1.

The comics are based on the 2002 cult TV series Firefly, a sci-fi western from Joss Whedon. After being cancelled during the production of its first season, the story was revived in 2005 as a movie, Serenity. More recently, since acquiring the license in 2018, BOOM! Studios has released several comics following the crew of the Serenity.

Blue Sun Rising will see Malcolm Reynolds and the rest of the Serenity crew reuniting to face off against the Blue Sun Corporation, an entity that has frequently appeared in the background of the ‘verse since the first episode of the series – so frequently, in fact, that in one episode, crewmember Jayne is seen wearing a shirt adorned with a “Blue Sun” logo.

According to the official press release for the crossover event, which you can read for yourself below, Blue Sun Rising will follow Sheriff Mal Reynolds as he works alongside a brand new partner, a law-enforcement robot built by the Blue Sun Corporation. Gee, a corporate-funded and designed cop-bot! What could go wrong?

While Blue Sun Rising will explore the future of the Serenity crew, readers who are feeling nostalgic will have Firefly comics to whet their appetite in Fall of 2020, as well, thanks to a graphic novel that will explore Hoban “Wash” Washburne’s backstory, Firefly: Watch How I Soar, available in November 2020.

LOS ANGELES, CA (June 15, 2020) – BOOM! Studios, in collaboration with 20th Century Studios today announced FIREFLY: BLUE SUN RISING #0, a special issue kicking off the first ever Firefly event from New York Times best-selling writer Greg Pak (Darth Vader, Ronin Island) and artist Dan McDaid (Firefly), along with series creator & story consultant Joss Whedon (the visionary writer/director behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Marvel’s The Avengers and more), as Mal and the crew take on the shadowy organization that’s haunted their steps all along—Blue Sun Corporation.

Sheriff Mal Reynolds has a new partner—a law-enforcing robot from the Blue Sun corporation, who doesn’t care about motives, mercy, or anything other than enforcing the law—no matter the cost.  The Blue Sun Corporation has helped to run the ‘Verse from the shadows for years, but they’re ready to step into the light and take over.

If Mal wants to keep his job and protect his sector, he probably should play by their rulebook. That leaves only one choice for Mal —reunite the crew of the Serenity for one last impossible job to save the ‘Verse.

FIREFLY: BLUE SUN RISING #0 features a main cover by acclaimed illustrator Nimit Malavia (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), along with variant covers from artists Christian Ward (Invisible Kingdom), Caitlin Yarsky (Coyotes), and more.

Fans can also discover a special prelude in FIREFLY #20, setting up the event that kicks off in FIREFLY: BLUE SUN RISING #0, both available in September 2020. Fans can follow the event in issues #21-24 of the FIREFLY main series by Pak and McDaid and the conclusion in FIREFLY BLUE SUN RISING #1.

Created by Whedon and set 500 years in the future in the wake of a universal civil war, Firefly centers on the crew of Serenity, a small transport spaceship that doesn’t have a planet to call home. Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds, a defeated soldier who opposed the unification of the planets by the totalitarian governed Alliance, will undertake any job — legal or not — to stay afloat and keep his crew fed. Thrust together by necessity but staying together out of loyalty, these disparate men and women are seeking adventure and the good life, but face constant challenges on the new frontier, such as avoiding capture by the Alliance, and evading the dangers you find on the fringes of the universe.

FIREFLY: BLUE SUN RISING #0  is available in September 2020 exclusively in comic shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Madefire.
