Titan Comics teamed with well-known crime novel publisher Hard Case Crime last year to launch a line of “hardboiled” crime comics. Last fall the pair began offering titles like Peepland, from crime novelist (and former peep show employee) Christa Faust and Gary Phillips with art by Andrea Camerini. The well-received series was allegedly semi-autobiographical,  “a neo-noir mini-series with a punk edge set in the seedy Times Square peep booths of 1980s New York City,” according to Titan.

If that sounds intriguing to you, you’ll likely be interested in our exclusive interior art reveal of Minky Woodcock: The Girl Who Handcuffed Houdini, a new series also from the Titan/Hard Case dynamic duo due out this November. Written and illustrated by staggering multi-hyphenate Cynthia von Buhler (playwright-illustrator-performance artist-musician-children’s author) Minky Woodcock stars the titular Minky in a Prohibition-era mystery series.

Though von Buhler may be somewhat new to comics, (she worked on a one-off release with Dark Horse for Amanda Palmer and Jason Webley’s Evelyn Evelyn) she’s no stranger to creating worlds in this particular milieu. You might recognize her name as the force behind immersive theater like Speakeasy Dollhouse and The Illuminati Ball for which she was profiled in the New York Times.  It stands to reason her foray into potboiler sequential art might be similarly engaging. From Titan:

Unappreciated at her father’s detective agency, the fabulous rabbit-loving Minky Woodcock straps on her gumshoes in order to uncover a magical mystery involving the world-famous escape artist, Harry Houdini!

If that tickles your fancy, it’s worth mentioning that von Buhler was also the cover artist for An Evening With Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer. Said Gaiman of her: “I was seduced by Cynthia von Buhler’s artwork. She is a wonder.”

Check out the interior art reveal below, along with series covers from the likes of one David Mack as well as Robert McGinnis, creator of iconic movie posters for the James Bond series and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Minky Woodcock: The Girl Who Handcuffed Houdini arrives in stores November 8, 2017 and is available to order from the upcoming September Diamond Previews.
