Welcome to the latest edition of the Comics Crowdfunding Round-Up! This week we’ve got a nice variety of projects we’re following, including a retelling of an ancient epic, a separate project with a sequel to that same epic, and several autobiographical anthologies.

Let’s get started!

Gilgamesh: Eternal #1

Creators: Cam Kerkau (writer), Kostas Pantoulas (artist), Mira Mortal (letterer), Nolan N. Nasser (variant cover artist)
Goal: $5,000
End Date: September 28th, 2021
Goodies: Digital and physical copies, ‘making of’ packets, and original art add-ons

The world’s first story, retold in the world’s greatest storytelling medium.

This series reimagines the epic of Gilgamesh, the millennia-old tale of gods and goddesses and the quest for knowledge, as a fantasy-action comic. The watercolor artwork looks stunning, and the story has endured across history for a reason. This campaign is to fund the first issue of the series.

Drawn to Home

Creators: Jay Poliziani (organizer), Northside Common Ministries
Goal: $1,000
End Date: October 31st, 2021
Goodies: Digital and physical copies of the completed anthology

A comic book which depicts the stories of nine different individuals who are or have experienced homelessness.

This project sounds incredible. Poliziani, the director of the Northside Common Ministries in Pittsburgh, PA, has paired people who have experienced homelessness with comic artists to tell their stories, and is going to distribute the printed anthology in schools, libraries, and community centers, in order to raise awareness about homelessness. The book is completed and at the printers, so this campaign is to cover the printing costs.

West of Virginia : A graphic novel

Creators: Aeric McBride (co-writer/artist), Arianna Pownall (co-writer)
Goal: $2,000
End Date: September 26th, 2021
Goodies: Digital and physical copies of the graphic novel

A story that takes place in the valleys of West Virginia long after a virus takes over the world when cryptids and mutants rule.

Not a lot of bells and whistles on this campaign, but what you do get is a 192-page graphic novel in full color. The book is already completed, so the campaign is just to fund the printing and shipment. The creators are from West Virginia themselves, and bring their knowledge of the area and its folklore to the book.

When I Was Me: Moments of Gender Euphoria

Creators: Eve Greenwood and Alex Assan (editors), Spire Eaton (book designer), Quindrie Press (publisher)
Goal: £15,000 (~$20,752)
End Date: September 29th, 2021
Goodies: Digital and physical copies, a set of 12 prints, and a large sticker

A collection of autobiographical comics about the joyful and euphoric moments of being trans.

As the campaign page explains it, “‘Gender euphoria’ is the overwhelming feeling of joy a gender-non-conforming person feels when their gender is explored, validated, and celebrated.” Who wouldn’t want to read a collection of true stories about people being happy living as their truest selves?

Death Comes for the Toymaker, Exclusive Double-Size Issue

Creators: Dakota Brown (writer), Ryan Cody (artist), Micah Myers (letterer), Scout Comics (publisher)
Goal: $8,000
End Date: October 2nd, 2021
Goodies: Digital and physical copies of the double-sized issue, stickers, buttons, a sweater, and more

Death comes for us all… But for Gil the Toymaker, the event is far more unpleasant.

This project bills itself as both an adaptation of and a sequel to the aforementioned Epic of Gilgamesh, and it looks like a lot of fun. The series will be published traditionally by Scout Comics; this Kickstarter is for an exclusive double-issue that includes the first two issues of the six-issue series. It’ll also sport a variant cover, if you’re into such things.
