Nice Art: Ted McKeever’s META 4

0
“What's different [about META 4],” McKeever said, “is the lack of a specific central theme or category. In the past, I would find myself wanting to do a ‘political drama’ or an ‘apocalyptic horror’ tale. But here, I am allowing myself to weave through [different] subjects, and pull into it whatever is needed based on that given scenario. The challenge is to make it all work.”The key to that, he said, lies with the characters. “[They] have to be designed in such a way that they come across as subtly ‘real’ and yet malleable enough to show extreme emotions when called for,” McKeever said.<

Marvel Month-to-Month Sales: April 2010

Crossover season continues! SIEGE #4 slipped into May, but that didn't stop a bunch of tie-in books from shipping, including the final issues of several Avengers titles before the line gets revamped. HULK and INCREDIBLE HULK didn't ship either, but there's still some WORLD WAR HULK books on this list. And the X-books kick off their major crossover, "Second Coming." April also saw the release of the Iron Man movie, complete with the launch of a second monthly Iron Man title. And we've got the first issues of new DEADPOOL CORPS, S.H.I.E.L.D. and BLACK WIDOW, as well as a bunch of miniseries. As usual, Marvel had the largest share of the direct market, beating DC by 45% to 33% in units, and 39% to 30% in dollars.

Renner signs as Hawkeye for AVENGERS

Well, well, it looks like things are shaping up for Joss Whedon's AVENGERS movie , as Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) ahs joined the cast as Hawkeye. So far we have RDJ as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Cap, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, ScarJo as The Black Widow, and Don Cheadle as War Machine. That's a hefty and costly lineup of stars, but thrifty Marvel is asking the actors to take pay cuts and otherwise watching the budget very, very closely, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Joe Quesada, whose been serving up his Cup o' Joe as Marvel Publishing's E-i-C- and CCO for a decade, has taken a larger role at Marvel Entertainment as Chief Creative Officer where he'll work alongside Alan Fine to provide creative input on Marvel's continuing expansion into all media.

Although Quesada has said in the past that the job of editor in chief "comes with a shelf life," his success at guiding Marvel's iconic characters through the digital era and into acquisition by Disney has led him to an even more important role at the company. PR below:

Second SCOTT PILGRIM trailer debuts

You know, we've been expecting that this thing will be awesome, and this just confirms it, but seeing it all laid out like that makes us wonder if the movie going audience -- which has recently shown itself to be pretty reactionary and unadventurous -- will really except a teenaged romance comedy with lots of fighting. Either the girls will love the romance and the guys will love the fighting...or the girls will hate the fighting and the guys will hate the romance like they usually do. More to the point, can Hollywood successfully MARKET a movie that has crossover appeal?
