Retailers Reax to Rebirth: what’s behind that curtain?
All we've seen of Rebirth is a big blue curtain, and there's a lot of anxiety about what's behind the curtain. You may recall the game show Let's Make a Deal where contestants had to pick the prize behind one of three curtains. Will Rebirth be a new car or a box of macaroni and cheese?
The entire comics industry benefits from a strong DC Comics. A lack of customers who are eager to read the exploits of some of the medium's best known characters is a concerning thing to retailers and even other publishers, who know that the Big Two are the core of the existing business. I'm told even some at Marvel are worried about the effects of Rebirth. DC execs faced many tough questions at the ComicsPRO meting where it was announced, and skepticism and hope were felt in equal measure, sometimes by the same person.

Spawn wants you to stay inside the lines with new adult coloring book
The adult coloring book craze has been a godsend to the publishing industry, with massive sales and attention. And comics publishers are picking up on it. Image Comics has joined the fray with a Walking Dead coloring book and now a Spawn coloring book, which comes out on April 19th. I'm told that coloring is relaxing and helps adults unwind after stressful days of looking at pixels and Buzzfeed for hours.
And surely nothing could be more relaxing than filling the work of Todd McFarlane with pleasing and harmonious hues.
LINE Webtoon: readership is 50% female
Mobile comics platform LINE Webtoon is huge in Korea and getting bigger here, and they are no slouches in the diversity department. According to a release, 42% of LINE WEbstoon's creators are female, 48% of its comics feature female leads, and 50% of its over 6 million daily readers are women. Impressive, if not surprising statistics. And they'll discuss them more at a “Women in Digital Comics” panel to be held at SXSW on Friday, March 18th. Participants include moderator Tom Akel, LINE Webtoon's director of content, and 2 Broke Girls’ star Beth Behrs (Dents), digital star Michelle Phan (Helios : Femina), LINE Webtoon creators Kaitlyn Narvaza (Where Tangents Meet, Siren’s Lament) and Susanna Nousiainen (ShootAround), and one of the winners of LINE Webtoon’s recent Superhero Comics Contest, Sandra Diaz (Supersonic Girl).
