Marvel is repacking some of its All New All Different titles as an all old and all the same reprint line under the Timely Comics banner. The first three issues of selected titles will be published in a $3 format starting in June.

Timely Comics is of course the original name for the publishing company that would eventually become Marvel – starting in 1939.

If you’re keeping score, June is also when DC’s Rebirth line debuts with plus-sized first issues for $2.99. So if you’re on a budget you may have several options to chose from. Or multiple jumping on points.

Timely indeed.

Here’s the list of titles:

–          TIMELY COMICS: INVINCIBLE IRON MAN
–          TIMELY COMICS: ALL-NEW, ALL-DIFFERENT AVENGERS
–          TIMELY COMICS: ALL-NEW INHUMANS
–          TIMELY COMICS: CARNAGE
–          TIMELY COMICS: DAREDEVIL
–          TIMELY COMICS: DRAX
–          TIMELY COMICS: DOCTOR STRANGE
–          TIMELY COMICS: MOON GIRL AND DEVIL DINOSAUR
–          TIMELY COMICS: NEW AVENGERS
–          TIMELY COMICS: SCARLET WITCH

  1. Here are the problems:

    1) It’s a new imprint. DC and Marvel has a trail of tears blazed by imprints… Soleil, New Universe, Marvel Next, Tsunami… Kudos for them trying something new, but unless there’s a strong launch (2099, Marvel Knights, Marvel Max), it’s not going to last

    2) These are aimed at reluctant and new readers, but Marvel doesn’t have newsstand distribution.

    3) Which means that they are only available at comics shops… which most likely have long boxes filled with copies purchased to qualify for the variants. Were I a dealer, I’d package those back issues and sell at cost, hoping to convince people to read the new series. Will retailers buy these Timely titles?

    4) These are shipping in JUNE. The trade collections are shipping Spring and Summer… Iron Man will be available in APRIL. These reprints are being issued SIX MONTHS after the original issue… that’s “Timely”?

    5) What Marvel SHOULD do? Repeat their $5 Walmart promo of a few years ago. Print cheap editions like these Timely titles (rated T) with a cardstock cover, EAN, and sell them via Scholastic book fairs. Ms. Marvel, Squirrel Girl, Devil Dinosaur, Spidey…

  2. I think they should find as many alternate places to put these outside of comic shops and the shops will reap the benefit. These will be too old for comic shops with the trades out, which the dealers would probably rather sell.

  3. Get the reprints into the movie chains, toy stores and gaming shops. Go where the target audience is, We know they aren’t going inside a comic store.

  4. This just smells of “Hey, let’s just reprint a bunch of “bleh” comics and sell them for a buck cheaper as a “budget line” just so we can fill up the shelves with more crap and take some wind out of DC’s relaunch sales in June! Yay, us!” – This line will die quickly, I’ll bet you.

  5. On the other hand – it might just lead them to have a stock of comics they can get into MAINSTREAM settings, for customers who don’t care about what’s current, but want to read some comics they can afford.

It’ll all be in the market placement really.
