Fact check: can you really fight in The Brokeback Pose?

0
Okay so like we don't have enough to do, we just started a tumblr for The Brokeback Pose. Because...well because it's so awesome. To get us warmed up, here's a post from a martial artist/contortionist, who explains that having your top and bottom face different directions is not that easy...and not very realistic in a fight. (Here's a follow-up post with more.)

Kyle Baker is working on something called HOTWIRE

0
Multi-talented Kyle Baker has been a little under the radar for a while. He's working on some comics and animation proects, including, it seems something called HOTWIRE written by Kevin McCarthy (EPOCH). Or as Baker put it: I think this is the cover. Looks like a comic about a flying girl with pink hair...we're in.

His long-time collaborator Beau Smith remembers Eduardo Barreto, who passed away a few weeks ago -- a remembrance accompanied by some stunning art.

Buy Kevin Eastman's studio

0
Did you get some money from Memaw and Pepaw for Christmas? If you're not going to spend it on a comics shop, howabout buying Kevin Eastman's art studio? The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator is auctioning off all the contents of his art studio -- located within Meltdown Comics -- with 20% of the proceeds to go to the Hero Initiative. Eastman gives a tour of the overflowing contents of the studio in the very entertaining video above. Among the anecdotes he drops along the way -- he once owned a Batmobile and his goal was to dress in a complete Batman costume and drive up to the 7-11 for a pack of smokes in full Batman gear -- a dream sadly unrealized. Here's some of what you will win in this treasure trove of '90s and '00s nostalgia.

Cover Gallery: Joe Simon

0
When Joe Simon passed away at the age of 98 last week, he left behind an impressive body of work. Although everyone knows he was the partner of Jack "King" Kirby, Simon and Kirby were partners in the truest sense -- collaborating freely on art and writing, with Simon mostly the editor and Kirby the art director. However, Simon was a prolific artist on his own. While he didn't have Kirby's command of sheer power and imagination, he did have a way with wiry, dynamic heroes. Heritage Auctions recently ran a cover tribute to Simon in their newsletter -- have a look:

Sharon Moody repaints Kirby

0
Is there a new Lichtenstein roaming the forests? Scott Edelman has brought to our attention thr work of Sharon Moody who paints trompe l'oeil paintings of comics by Jack Kirby, Sal Buscema and others -- but Edelman is bothered by the fact that the source artists are not credited anywhere:

Nice art: Francesco Francavilla's BLACK BEETLE in DARK HORSE PRESENTS

0
Add another art all-star to the new DHP lineup: Francesco Francavilla is drawing a three part BLACK BEETLE story that will start in issues #11 in April. Black Beetle is Francavilla's own pulp tribute character, previously published online and in a scarce ashcan. ANd as you can see from the art, it's a perfect fit for Franvavilla's retro style.

To do tonight, Berlin: Erik Mark Sandberg

0
As they say, if we were in Berlin, we'd go to this. Maybe. We have no idea what it is but the invite was too cool not to post. Erik Mark Sandberg is actually an American artist, based in LA, who has exhibited worldwide. He's best known for his images of hairy children mixed with startling pop culture tableaux.
