Every once in a while Marvel likes to get cultural by commissioing a bunch of variant covers in the style of great paintings. they’ve just done this with April’s Avengers Art Appreciation Variants, which will whet your appetite for both the Avengers movie AND a trip to the local museum. Alex Maleev, Michael Kaluta, Gabriele Dell’Otto, Greg Horn, Gerald Parel and more channel Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Monet, Pollock, and Egon Schiele (one ‘l’). Which one do you like best?

Among our favorites, Charles Paul Wilson III‘s Ernest Thompson take off for the Hulk and Joe Quinones doing Lautrec on Secret Avengers.

  1. Oh, how I loathe variant covers that don’t even take the effort to vaguely refer to the book they’re on.

I’ve made my peace with just not buying the rest of the many variants out there, but these themed sets annoy me endlessly no matter what the actual art looks like.

  2. I like these and hope they appear as back matter in a collected edition. Wish I could immediately recognize more of the artists being imitated.

As an aside: poor, poor Hawkeye. His new Ultimate/movie style look is dull.

  3. Some of these are pure Genius, most notably the Mike del Mundo (I’d buy that as a limited poster), the STEFFI SCHUTZEE for channeling “Al Hirchfeld”, and the Mike Kaluta to mention a few, I wish they were posters! I’d buy them for sure , now if only the content was as cool as the cover’s – Great idea overall, can’t wait? (for the new John Carter movie!!)

  4. “So are they saying that comics are not art, since you need a special reference to some classic painting to make it ‘art’?”

    No, they are not.

  5. Thanks for putting all the covers together! I was just looking at the solicits and wondering if they’d collect ’em.

Not into the contents under the covers meself. Kinda wish Marvel put the same effort here into them contents.
