A lot of great out-of-print comics by Kurt Busiek are about to become available again.

While yesterday’s big news about Scott Snyder got a ton of attention, it wasn’t the only noteworthy story about a creator’s body of work. Image announced that it would be putting out digital editions of a number of Busiek’s titles, including the much loved Astro City, which was drawn by Brent Anderson and others. The books are coming out on August 4th via comiXology.

“I’m thrilled to be consolidating my creator-owned books at Image,” said Busiek in a statement. “Readers have been asking us to make these stories available again, so we’re glad to have them all together at last, and in great company with the rest of the Image line. This is just the beginning, too—there’ll be new material coming as well, but that’ll be another announcement for another day.”

The other titles include Arrowsmith with art by Carlos Pacheco and Jesus Merino, The Wizard’s Tale with art by David Thorn Wenzel, Shockrockets with art by Stuart Immonen and Wade von Grawbadger, and Superstar: As Seen on TV with art by  Immonen and von Grawbadger.

Astro City began as a WildStorm title when that imprint was at Image — it was most recently published by DC, a run that ended in 2018. Arrowsmith was also published by Image as part of WildStorm’s Cliffhanger imprint in 2003. The other three titles also debuted at Image as part of the Gorilla Comics line, a creator-owned imprint started by Busiek, Mark Waid and others. Superstar: As Seen on TV predates the idea of social media, so that should be interesting.

The announcement suggest several other newsworthy observations.

#1, it sounds like the start of a Busiek-centric publishing program at Image — including new Astro City material, which has been teased for a while.

#2, owning your backlist is a great idea for future income. The idea is common among authors in the traditional book publishing world, but comics seems to be building up more infrastructure to support it all the time. And Busiek was way ahead of the pack in the idea of keeping his publishing rights.
