Set in a beautiful beachside town, Battle in the Flower Gardens follows two adolescents on the precipice of adulthood. Culling from real life experience, Medeiros weaves a story of joy, sadness, and the magical feeling of summers that last forever, that will keep the reader engaged until the very last page. As for the art, Medeiros has divided the look of the art into two distinct and compelling styles to capture the journey of self-discovery and growth the character is experiencing.

Every summer, Luke goes to the beach with his parents and his best friend, Mitchell, with whom he shares various geek interests and pastimes. But this summer everything changes, testing and altering their friendship forever.

Like many teenagers in the 90s, Luke and Mitchell find refuge from their parents and the real world in the arcades. As the summer lingers on, the boys struggle to navigate their friendship, culminating in a battle over video game skills that has real life consequences and will reverberate amongst the teenagers forever.

Ultimately, Battle in the Flower Gardens is a story about family, friendship, and the unexpectedness of life.

Battle in the Flower Gardens is a story I’ve been wanting to tell for a long time,” said Medeiros. “When I was a young boy, my family had a tradition of spending every summer at Capão Novo, a beachside town in southern Brazil. It’s where I have some of my fondest memories, and much of that has found its way into this book.”

Medeiros continued, “This book is deeply personal and the process of creating it took me on a sweet journey back to the days of my youth. I hope readers enjoy the story and I encourage them to reminisce about the experiences that have shaped them.”
