Just a few hours after Matt Reeves sharing the logo and Jim Lee art from The Batman ahead of DC FanDome, a Vanity Fair exclusive has announced that Ben Affleck will be donning the cowl at least once more in the upcoming The Flash film helmed by director Andy Muschietti.

Set for release in the summer of 2022, The Flash will star Ezra Miller, who previously portrayed the speedster in the DC Extended Universe alongside Affleck’s dark knight. According to the Vanity Fair piece, Affleck received the script and agreed to join the project this week.

“His Batman has a dichotomy that is very strong, which is his masculinity—because of the way he looks, and the imposing figure that he has, and his jawline —but he’s also very vulnerable,” Muschietti said in an interview. “He knows how to deliver from the inside out, that vulnerability. He just needs a story that allows him to bring that contrast, that balance.”

“He’s a very substantial part of the emotional impact of the movie. The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before,” the director added. “It’s Barry’s movie, it’s Barry’s story, but their characters are more related than we think. They both lost their mothers to murder, and that’s one of the emotional vessels of the movie. That’s where the Affleck Batman kicks in.”

Of course, Batfleck isn’t the only veteran Batman actor returning in The Flash. Earlier this year, Michael Keaton was also reported to appear as an older Batman thanks to time traveling shenanigans that comic fans will recognize as an element adapted from the 2011 Flashpoint DC Comics storyline.

While DC Comic films has had difficulty replicating the success of the shared Marvel Cinematic Universe, it appears that they’re finally embracing the multiverse of DC Comics allowing different versions and interpretations of characters to appear on screen. In fact, last year’s The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event saw Ezra Miller encounter Grant Gustin‘s version of the character.

At last check, The Flash is currently scheduled for release on July 1st, 2022.

  1. Looks like DC can’t launch a new movie franchise without dragging Batman or Bruce Wayne into it somehow.
