It’s been over four years since the ending of Justice League #50, the final chapter in the “Darkseid War” storyline, and the revelation by Metron’s Möbius chair to Batman that there are not one but three Jokers in the DC Universe. Batman’s investigation into the claim was teased in the DC Universe: Rebirth one-shot, and the long wait for that story is almost over, as next month sees the release of Batman: Three Jokers #1. The three-issue series from writer Geoff Johns and artists Jason Fabok & Brad Anderson, published under DC’s Black Label imprint of mature readers titles, finds Batman, Batgirl, and Red Hood on the trail of The Joker, and promises to redefine the character in the same way the seminal The Killing Joke did thirty years ago.
Now DC Comics has released a quintet of unlettered preview pages from Batman: Three Jokers #1, each with its own unique title. The pages, titled “Scars,” “Damaged Goods,” “Being Better,” and “Irredeemable,” offer a look at each of the three protagonists of the series, and a possible glimpse of The Joker himself. The new pages join four previously-released unlettered preview pages for the series. Fabok and Anderson’s work is spectacular as always, and the nine-panel grid in use here indicates the goal of making this not just a spiritual successor to The Killing Joke, but a visual one as well.
