The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye, Sonny Liew’s incredible history of Singapore told through an invented comics history, has become the first graphic novel to win the Singapore Literature Prize for English Fiction. It also won Book of the Year at the Singapore Book Awards.
The accolades come as some vindication for Liew; the book was the oject of some controversy last year when Singapore’s National Arts Council withdrew a grant for the book over it’s controversial content which they claimed “potentially underminds the authority or legitimacy of the Government”.
