Less than a year after firing James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Disney has rehired the filmmaker to helm the movie.
This is, for a few reasons, surprising news. Disney dismissed Gunn from the film in July. The move came after right wing social media accounts resurfaced offensive and tasteless tweets Gunn made years several ago. Gunn, who had apologized for the tweets, subsequently moved to rival studio Warner Bros. to work on DC’s Suicide Squad follow up.
The firing was a controversial one. I remember being at SDCC as the news broke, overhearing incredulous muttering from fans pretty much everywhere. In the days that followed, Guardians franchise stars wrote an open letter calling for Gunn to be rehired. Dave Bautista, who portrays Drax, was so outspoken that questions arose regarding whether he’d continue on with Marvel Studios.
This story was broke earlier today by Deadline.
UPDATE: Soon after the news broke Gunn took to Twitter with a message of gratitude…

  1. The fact that they never even looked for another Director suggests this was always the plan; they just needed to let some time pass before doing it.
So what with this and Captain Marvel being a smash hit, it’s been a bad week for the right-wing ass-hat side of Fandom,

  2. Hahahahaha…. that’s pretty funny…. and the right thing to have done. Steps in the right direction… does Disney shift with the prevailing winds? Think I’ll just be happy now.

  3. I’m looking for some Watchmen/Comedian-like dialogue, ‘it’s all a joke…’, at the nature of contemporary, modern existence. Appropriate, and I’m laughing… My ass off!

  4. Typical Western culture imperialist. No sin is too great for the media machine to purify. See Mel Gibson

  5. “So what with this and Captain Marvel being a smash hit, it’s been a bad week for the right-wing ass-hat side of Fandom.”
I feel their pain. They’re especially upset over Rotten Tomatoes cracking down on them posting bogus reviews of movies they haven’t seen. How DARE they expect people to see movies before panning them!

  6. L. O. L. Now that they’ve gotten all their social praise for booting a “bad guy.” Let’s face it. He was a known quantity, and all their actors were out of Guardians 3 because Disney let Gunn go from the project. So…billions of dollars vs appeasing some internet crowd…

  7. I’ve been noticing this trend in pop culture reporting over the past few years.
“The move came after right wing social media accounts resurfaced offensive and tasteless tweets Gunn made years several ago.”
Love the site. Been reading for years. Just a personal opinion in regards to reporting: good journalism should always remain fair and unbiased.
“The move came after right wing social media accounts resurfaced tweets Gunn made years several ago that some have described as offensive and tasteless,” and go on to somehow cite that alleged description.
Keeps the scale even on both sides and lets the people decide how they feel either way.

  8. “I look forward to Disney rehiring Roseanne next.”
From an article at the Atlantic by David Sims:
“So what separates Gunn’s tweets from, say, the bigoted Twitter tirade that got Roseanne Barr fired by ABC (another part of the Disney Corporation)? For one, Barr’s invective about African Americans and various conspiracy theories was a years-long problem on her social-media feeds that continued into the present day and that appeared to reflect personal beliefs — weakening Barr’s argument that her tweets were just jokes made “in bad taste.” And unlike Gunn, Barr lost the support of much of her cast and crew, some of whom refused to participate in future seasons of her show.”
