Per Variety, it looks like we won’t be starving for Joker movies anytime soon as Jared Leto’s Joker will now receive his own standalone feature that is wholly unconnected from the Todd Phillips-directed origin feature that was announced last year.

The outlet’s sources say that Leto is set to star and executive produce a standalone Joker movie that will pave the way for future Suicide Squad-related spin-offs. The return of Slipknot is nigh!!!

Joaquin Phoenix is already set to play the Joker (reportedly) in that above-mentioned 1980’s set origin film, but as it will be under what Variety is terming an “origins” banner, it will be firmly set outside of the continuity of the mainline DCU on film.

Leto and the studio are currently looking for a writer for the project, but there’s no start date in place. This spinoff follows on the heels of the Margot Robbie-produced Birds of Prey feature that will star her Harley Quinn, and this film probably takes the spot that was rumored for a Joker/Harley film that kept being bantied about. Perhaps Robbie will appear…it seems likely.

After a year-long break, the DCU will live on this December in Aquaman, and the upcoming Shazam! and Wonder Woman sequel.
