Charles Addams legendary New Yorker cartoon is returning to its animated roots in a new feature helmed by Sausage Party directors Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon, and MGM has provided a full cast list for the new film…which includes Oscar Isaac, who has been long wish-listed as a live action Gomez Addams taking on the vocal duties of the character instead.

The Addams Family‘s new cast will also include Charlize Theron as Morticia, Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday, Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley, Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester, Bette Midler as Grandma Addams, and Allison Janney as Margaux Needler, the film’s antagonist.

MGM has provided the pitch for the new take below:

Based on the famous New Yorker creations of Charles Addams, this animated action-comedy will follow the Addams family whose lives begin to unravel when they face-off against a crafty reality-TV host while also preparing for their extended family to arrive for a major celebration, Addams-style.

Morticia, devilishly devoted to her husband and children, is the pale glue that holds her clan together. Gomez, debonair, sinister and passionately in love with his wife, is enthusiastic about whatever dreadful scheme he’s cooked up. Wednesday is a brilliant and sinister teenage girl with long braids and dead-pan wit. Pugsley, a menacing 10 year old on over-drive, enjoys getting into any kind of dreadful mischief he can find. Mad Uncle Fester is good natured, merry and likes to create mayhem any way he can. Grandmama is smitten with her grandchildren who enjoy her cookies shaped like bats and skulls. Margaux Needler, the reality TV makeover queen, is consumed with a desire for absolute suburban, pastel perfection.

One area of curiosity from the PR, it looks like the film will provide a bit of an origin story for the clan, per this quote from co-director Vernon:

“Greg and I have always been a fan of the Addams Family in past versions, so when we set out to make this movie, we were excited to do something new. With that in mind, I drew from the brilliantly original Charles Addams New Yorker cartoons for the look of the film and decided to tell the story of how Gomez and Morticia meet, find their house and start their family. This unique approach is what drew me in to direct the film. The reimagining also extends to the stellar cast we’ve put together who will each bring their own spin to our film that will appeal to longtime fans of the Addams and introduce them to a new generation.”

It’s certainly a nicely put together cast, and while I don’t think anything will ever top the incredible Addams Family Values, I’m down to see them try, particularly with those two top-lining stars.

The Addams Family hits theaters on October 11, 2019.

  1. I by accident watched both the Addams Family movies on tv recently and was a bit surprised that I liked them a lot (last watched them when I was a teenager, and I would have left them behind with MC Hammer).

Chloe Grace Moretz is a bit old for Wednesday IMO, but they must see something.

  2. This should be interesting. The Addam’s are a flexible format, they worked on tv, in cartoons with Scooby-Doo, the movies were far better than I thought they’d be. I’m looking forward to this.

  3. Excellent cast. My only quibble would be, do we really need an origin story for this crew? But this looks like it might be fun.

  4. Though it isn’t widely known, there were two paperback books written about the Addams Family. The first was the best, a collection of short stories that included when they bought the house and how they first encountered Thing. Hard to find, but worth a look.
