On Thursday, IDW announced its latest Transformers comic. This new series, Transformers: Galaxies is the first of a few planned stories that will build on the recently rebooted mainline. It’s all part of a grand expansion of the universe, featuring arcs that delve deeper into the origins, motivations, and world-shattering machinations of the extended Transformers cast.” The initiative begins with a crew fans know as the Constructicons.
For those who aren’t familiar with them, the original Constructicons team consists of Scrapper, Hook, Scavenger, Bonecrusher, Mixmaster and Long Haul. If the name doesn’t give it away already, they’re basically the R&D team for the Decepticons – they’re designers, engineers and builders. But that’s not all. They can also merge together to create the super powerful Devastator.
To handle this devastating team is an even stronger creative line-up. Vox Media co-founder Tyler Bleszinski will write Transformers: Galaxies. He unites with Livio Ramondelli, who’s worked as an artist for the franchise for several years on titles including the 2009 ongoing series, Optimus Prime, Autocracy, Punishment and much more. Together, they’ll explore Cybertron itself and how it came to be what fans know it as in canon.
“Long ago, after the War Against the Threefold Spark ended, the Constructicons emerged to help rebuild the decimated planet in grand fashion. But what happened to them in the years since? Why had they been erased from Cybertron’s history… and what have they been planning for their devastating return?”
Bleszinski promises to do right by the Constructicons, and hopefully shine a light on the work that they’ve done to contribute to Transformer society. He says “humanizing the Constructicons in a refreshed origin story with Livio Ramondelli – one of the most talented Transformers artists ever – will be one of the highlights of my life and will give me the opportunity to share my passion for these incredible creations with my kids’ generation. This is truly a dream come true.”
Editor David Mariotte, meanwhile teases at some of the story’s potential themes: “Transformers: Galaxies delves into what’s happening away from Cybertron. Tyler and Livio are working on a story about broken promises and lost futures — about those who fall by the wayside to maintain a utopia.”
Transformers: Galaxies hits comic shops this September along with a wide range of variants to choose from. IDW has lined up covers from Livio Ramondelli himself, Nick Roche, George Caltsoudas and Casey W. Coller – you can check out a few of them for yourself below.
