Comedy-rock duo Tenacious D is giving their latest album, Post-Apocalypto, the graphic novel treatment. None other than the D’s Jack Black and Kyle Gass are co-writing it, and “hand-drawn entirely by Black,” the book is set for a September 2020 release by Fantagraphics.
The 2018 album, which was previously adapted into an animated webseries on the band’s YouTube channel, is a concept album following JB and KG’s adventures through a treacherous post-apocalyptic wasteland, replete with the bombastic vocals, heavy metal guitar riffs, and raunchy humor fans have come to expect from the actor/musicians.
What may be particularly exciting about this project is that Jack Black is drawing the whole shebang. His visual style is amateurish, to be sure, which is to be expected from a comedian not known for drawing professionally, but it fits the Tenacious D style.
Tenacious D’s appeal has always been driven by slacker charm and tongue-in-cheek, juvenile satire, so their debut graphic novel looks destined to be a hit among their devoted fan base.
