Everyone is hiring someone to develop their comics today! Add online webcomics portal Tapas to the mix with the announcement that Kevin Nicklaus will take the position of Head of Creative Development, where he will (say it with me) develop Tapas’ IP into films, TV and more. Nicklaus comes to Tapas from The Wolper Organization, a production company based at Warner Bros., where he was Senior Vice President of Development.

Tapas, as we keep telling you, has a large online audience for its serialized comics, which are optimized for reading on mobile phones. According to PR, they have over 8 billion views to date from more than 8.6M registered users, over 63,000 creators, 96,000 series, and more than 1.6M episodes. It’s a lot of IP to develop! And now to the PR:

“I could not be prouder to join Tapas Media.” says Nicklaus. “This is an opportunity to embrace a new generation of storytellers, who have created unique, diverse narratives, empowered by the Tapas app. I am eager to adapt Tapas IP into innovative film and television projects with top creative partners. I’ve always loved comics for bold storytelling, and that sense of adventure permeates Tapas’ titles. As I’m developing Tapas titles for production, I also hope to help lure my writer friends to bring their unproduced stories to Tapas as novels and comics. I’m thrilled to be part of such a forward-thinking, growth-oriented company.”

“We are so happy to have Kevin bring his deep industry experience, strong relationships, and creative energy to our content,” said Michele Wells, CCO of Tapas Media. “Not only does he understand what it takes to build a successful slate on the film and TV side, but Kevin’s genuine passion for our storytelling along with his strategic approach to external partnerships make him the perfect fit as our list grows and expands.”

The NYU alumnus brings a wealth of experience to Tapas having developed multiple live-action programs including Bates Motel, Penn & Teller: Bullshit, as well as event-limited series such as the recent, reimagined, Emmy-nominated Roots (History, A&E, Lifetime) – which featured Rege-Jean Page, Laurence Fishburne, Forest Whitaker, and Anika Noni Rose, produced with Will Packer and LeVar Burton; Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot (TNT), The Mists of Avalon (TNT), Helter Skelter (CBS), Sybil (CBS), A Will Of Their Own (NBC), The Bad Seed (Lifetime), and more. Prior to Wolper, Nicklaus entered the entertainment industry via positions at Longbow Entertainment and Alicia Silverstone’s First Kiss banner. While attending NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, he was selected for an internship through the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, hosted by Davis Entertainment. He has proudly worked as a host with the Television Academy ever since.
