24 Hours of Halloween: Emily Caroll’s When The Darkness Presses
F YEAH!!!!!! If there is one Halloween tradition in comics that must be kept is a new digital comic by Emily Caroll! Her previous uses of the digital palette to create horror has made her one of the few true autuers of "future comics"—and the print iteration, Through the WoodsThrillbent teams with IDW for print collections
The Thrillbent digital comics imprint created by Mark Waid and John Rogers is coming to print from IDW, home to many a comics imprint. Starting next year, IDW will bring out print collection of Thrillbent titles, starting with Empire Volume Two and Insufferable,
“I love print comics,” said Waid in a statement. “While we have always proudly been digital-first, print was always in Thrillbent’s business plan--but for a start-up company like ours, it was cost-prohibitive. Once we proved our commitment to ongoing content--Thrillbent currently hosts literally hundreds of new comics, with more added every week--we were courted by several print publishers looking to partner. IDW was the clear choice--its track record for i
24 Hours of Halloween: Read David Hine’s STRANGE EMBRACE for free
David Hine's Strange Embrace has quietly become a classic horror comic. The eerie tale of a delivery whose weekly trip to a house full of dysfunctional shut ins reveals secret after secret and descends into madness, sexual obssession and death, it's been published in various editions from Image, Active Images and even Atomeka since 2003. And now you can get the ULTIMATE version of the story via Sequential, the graphic novel app for iPads. This version is in the original black and white (at one point it was colored and though it looked great B&W fits the mood better). It also includes an intro by Paul Gravett, back matter and even AN AUDIO COMMENTARY FOR EACH PAGE. YOU heard that right. Sequential is aiming to make the "criterion collection" of digital graphic novels and they are doing a fine job of it.
Boom! Studios celebrates 10 years with variant covers
Boom! Studios is turning 10 in 2015, as we mentioned the other day. And Publisher Ross Richie has every right to make a victory lap—he;s stayed lean and smart, put out some good yarns, picked up some game-changing licenses such as Adventure Time, and even made a pretty good movie (Two Guns.) The 10th anniversary hoopla will be marked by special variant covers. Every new launch will have a special variant "10 Years" cover ... but perhaps it's best if I quote the press release to explain what is going on, because it's a little complicated. But I'm sure the covers will look very nice.

This November's Marvel comics will include a ton of Rocket Raccoon and Groot variant covers, making this officially the Year of An Awful Lot of Rocket and Groot, but as a waffer-thin nod towards making this maybe Too Much Rocket and Groot, one more cover by Simone Bianchi will appear.
“We were totally overwhelmed by the response to the Rocket Raccoon & Groot variants when we released them last month,” says Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel. “When Simone Bianchi said he wanted to do one too, we couldn’t resist! Creators in need: James Hudnall is losing a foot
Veteran comics writer James Hudnall, writer of Harsh Realm, ESPers, The Psycho and currently Blue Cat in Aces Weekly, has fallen on some difficult times and will lose a foot to a diabetic ulcer. I have no idea if Hudnall is insured or not, but he's sure to lose a few weeks of work and has set up a fund called Get James Hudnall Back on His Foot to help him over this period. He had recently moved to Austin and was not prepared for this financially.
Chris Butcher leaves UDON to concentrate on TCAF and The Beguiling
Truly one of the busiest men in comics, Chris Butcher has been leading a triple life for the last three years. Not only has he worked at the innovative, industry leading retailer The Beguiling, he's been the show runner for the industry leading Toronto Comic Arts Festival. And in his SPARE TIME (!) he was the Marketing Director for UDON Entertainment, the art studio and publisher of many video game and manga art books. But...no more, as Butcher is leaving his post at Udon:
