The fabled A1 Brit comics anthology, is getting a relaunch in June, and now an annual in October with the A1 Annual billed as "a Who’s Who of comics’ talent – past, present and future." And if you look at who's in it, you may just agree. The issue comes with two covers, including a Diamond exclusive cover by Jim Steranko and Stanley Lau. Contributors include everyone from Simon and Kirby reprints to Dave Johnson to Emily Hu. 176 pages and $22.99. Sold!

Pop quiz: What was the first graphic novel to make the New York Times' bestseller list? Most people would guess MAUS, and although we don't know exactly what book holds that honor, MAUS was predated by ALIEN: THE ILLUSTRATED STORY, by Archie Goodwin and Walt Simonson. First released in 1979 as a graphic "Album", it was an unusually serious (for its time) movie adaptation with the usual stellar work by the great team of Goodwin and Simonson, who also collaborated on Manhunter. The book sold so well it did make the NY Times bestseller list at the time.

Ah... Memorial Day approaches, and with it, summer vacation. Day after day of nothing which must be done, but full of possibilities! Maybe an escape to the air-conditioned refuge of your local library. Perhaps a day spent on the porch, sipping something cold and sinful (I prefer Brown Cows, served in a large ice tea glass). Or maybe hiding away up in a hayloft, or deep in a cool root cellar, where no one can find you. Whatever your preference, there's nothing like a good book to make you forget the world around you. It'll keep them quiet long enough for you to recharge your batteries.)
