Sales Charts: In the backlist, DC is king

10
It's been a while (5 years) since we looked at Diamond's monthly backlist chart, and now, as then, it reveals a VERY DIFFERENT ranking for publishers. In the backlist, DC is king by a wide margin, with about 30% of the market. Marvel is only a tich above Image in units, while Image books dominate the top ten with Saga, Walking Dead, and Sex Criminals. Put them all together and you can build a little house! IDW pioneered the form with books that reproduced art original size, with pencil marks and flaws intact. They're as spectacular as they are heavy.

MUST READ: Genius by Bernadin, Freeman and Richardson

How is it that a mini series that was conceived six years ago can actually be a stunningly accurate mirror of this week's events in Ferguson, MO, where the shooting of an unarmed black teen led to days of police action that looked like something out of a Christopher Nolan Batman movie? Could it be that the issues of race, inequality and violence that Genius deals with are so important that they were just as clear six years ago?
