This was an SPX unlike any previous SPX, as the tumult of the outside world has reached even Camp Comics. But the welcoming spirit of unity and creativity was still there, and strang as ever.

The 2017 Ignatz Award nominations have just been announced, and this years honorees are a solid mix of mainstream (March Book 3), indie (My Favorite Thing is Monsters) and micro-press/self-published (Carolyn Nowak, Sabin Cauldron). I draw no wider implications from the list except that comics 2017 artistically speaking are strong.  Emil Ferris's My Favorite Thing is Monsters - kind of the To Kill a Mockingbird of comics at this point - lead with three noms including Outstanding Artist,  GN and Story.

This year's Ignatz Award nominees have just been announced, and if you needed a reminder that 2014 was an awesome year for comics, here you go. This year's judges— Lamar Abrams, Cara Bean, Robyn Chapman, Sophie Goldstein and Corrine Mucha—have a great selection from the fairly popular (March, SuperMutant Magic Academy) to the up and comers (Sophie Goldstein's The Oven, Sophia Foster-Dimino's Sex Fantasy.)
