Howard the Duck comeback gains speed with “What The Duck??” April variants

3
Waugh! Marvel will release 20 variants covers in April celebrating Howard the Duck in a promotion with the saucy title of "What the Duck??" “Response to the announcement of the new Howard the Duck series has been staggering,” says Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel. “There were so many talented artists eager to take a quack at drawing a Howard cover we couldn’t resist building an entire variant month around him. This April is going to be WTD certified!”

Indie band Speedy Ortiz have announced a new album called Foil Deer and they chose to do so via a cute Michael DeForge comic. Because when you think "indie" and "deer" you think "Michael DeForge." The album from the Northhampton, MA-based band drops April 21 from Carpark Records.

Marvel: Heed the cry—we need a new swimsuit special

2
As mentioned earlier, I've been on a deadline and haven't had time to jump all over breaking industry news, but that worked out just fine in the case of the disappearing Marvel Swimsuit Issue update. It seems artists Kris Anka and Kevin Wada posted some images of what would be a NEW Marvel Swimsuit issue, updating the strangest comic of the 90s with a much needed new look at lycra and tencel. The initial pin-ups of some lissome lads were tasty, but the women had not even been drawn when the project had been KILLED. KILLED DEAD, taking with it the hopes and dreams of a thirsty nation.

Things about Denys Cowan: Dewars, Static, Shaft

3
I totally stole this from artist/producer Denys Cowan's FB page, but it's an interesting little sidenote, Back in the 90s people still read magazines, and liquor companies would purchase full page advertisements in these magazines. Man, history is SO WEIRD, right? Anyway, Dewars scotch ran a series of profiles of debonair achievers attempting to convince you that if you drank their scotch you would also be a debonair achiever. Cowan, then well known for his Batman and Question comics and about to co-found Milestone Media, was a fitting choice but it did seem like a win for comics at the time. This predated the Rob Liefeld Levis commercial, but both are a reminder that cartoonists as media figures is far from a recent phenomenon.
