Next month, writer Ta-Nehisi Coates wraps up his five-year run writing Marvel’s Black Panther series. Now the publisher has announced that Coates will also end his run on the other title he’s writing, Captain America, with June’s issue of the series. Illustrated by Leonard Kirk, Captain America #30 will conclude the “All Die Young” storyline, and bring Coates’s time on the series to a close.

In the announcement of Coates’s departure, Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort praised the writer’s run on the title:

Since taking over the ongoing adventures of Steve Rogers, Coates has provided readers with a thought-provoking examination about what it means to be Captain America and introduced new elements of the Captain America mythos such as the Daughters of Liberty and the villainous Power Elite. The acclaimed author’s run began with Captain America on the run as the most wanted man in America but will end with him restoring his honor in an epic fight to the finish with the Red Skull.

“After a stellar two and a half year run, Ta-Nehisi is bringing his tenure on CAPTAIN AMERICA to a close, with an epic finale to the story that he’s been building all throughout his time on the title,” Executive Editor Tom Brevoort said. “And Leonard Kirk is providing some epic artwork—it’s going to be a climax to remember!”

Coates, a winner of awards including the 2015 National Book Award for Nonfiction for his book Between the World and Me, and a 2018 Best Limited Series Eisner Award for Black Panther: World of Wakanda, took over writing chores on Captain America in 2018, at a time when the character was still reeling from the events of the much-maligned Secret Empire storyline. Coates’s run has been somewhat uneven, but if nothing else Cap wasn’t secretly a Nazi so on that front it’s been an unqualified success.

With Coates now no longer writing any comics for Marvel, he’s got plenty of free time to work on a recently-announced project for the Distinguished Competition: the screenplay he’s writing for a J.J. Abrams-produced Superman film.
