Last week, Marvel unveiled more stories and covers for its highly-anticipated Spider-Man/Superman crossover in April. With DC’s Superman/Spider-Man being released first one-shot next month in March, it stood to reason that the publisher would also unveil the additional variant covers it had teased when the crossover was first announced. Sure enough, DC has revealed a second wave of variant covers for Superman/Spider-Man #1, arriving March 25.
This second wave showcases covers drawn by all-star comics artists including Mitch Gerads; Rafa Sandoval and Ulises Arreola; J. Scott Campbell; Adam Hughes; Steve Lieber and Nathan Fairbairn; Evan “Doc” Shaner; Jeff Spokes; Chrissie Zullo-Uminga; Scott Koblish and Hi-Fi; and Jorge Jiménez and Tomeu Morey. These covers pair heroes, supporting characters, and even a few unexpected icons from both storied universes.
While there’s no denying that this Superman/Spider-Man crossover is packed with all-star creative teams, I think it’s safe to say that fans are champing at the bit to see the Eisner-award winning Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen team of writer Matt Fraction and artist Steve Lieber reunite for a story pairing the aforementioned Daily Planet photographer with Cletus Kasaday better known as Carnage. In fact, during a livestream with the Comic Book Club yesterday, Fraction explained the genesis of the project and even revealed the story’s brilliant title of “Jimmy Con Carnage.” Until the issue hits shelves, DC is giving fans a small taste with a variant cover by Lieber.
I’d also be remiss without highlighting the brilliant variant cover by Evan “Doc” Shaner showcasing both the Supermobile and Spider-Mobile in action, celebrating the era when even the world’s greatest heroes occasionally needed a set of wheels. Likewise, I dare you to look at the Jeff Spokes variant cover featuring ‘90s Superboy and Spider-Punk without hearing the song “Punkrocker” in your head.

As previously announced, the Superman/Spider-Man crossover is headlined by the “Truth, Justice, and Great Responsibility” from writer Mark Waid and artist Jorge Jiménez, in which intrepid newshounds Clark Kent and Peter Parker uncover a conspiracy that pulls Superman and Spider-Man into a universe-spanning threat involving Brainiac and Doctor Octopus. DC has revealed that Jiménez has also created a new pin-up paying homage to Ross Andru’s iconic back-cover illustration from Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man, which will appear as an interior page. In fact, Jiménez posted the piece on his Instagram yesterday.
The issue will also include seven bonus tales:
- Lois Lane and Mary Jane Watson by Tom King and Jim Lee
- Jimmy Olsen and Carnage by Matt Fraction and Steve Lieber
- Superboy and Spider-Man 2099 by Sean Murphy
- Power Girl and The Punisher by Gail Simone and Belén Ortega
- Superboy-Prime and Symbiote Spider-Man by Christopher Priest and Daniel Sampere
