The current, pandemic-abbreviated seasons of many of The CW’s series have reached their de facto season finales, but the network is already looking ahead to next year and what’s to come once production is able to safely start up again. One of the big questions for the network’s shared DC superhero universe has been how they’re going to follow up this year’s massive Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, which spanned every series in the Arrowverse (are we still calling it that now that Arrow is over?) and resulted in a new status quo for everyone involved. Today we got an answer to that question: they’re going to go smaller. Deadline reports that CW chairman/CEO Mark Pedowitz revealed the next event will be a crossover between Batwoman and the newly-launching Superman & Lois.

“It will be a smaller event than usual,” Pedowitz reportedly stated. “We’re only planning a two-hour event. We are talking about doing Superman and Batwoman together. There’s a lot of characters coming from our other shows.” The last sentence indicates other heroes like Supergirl or The Flash may also put in appearances.

The news comes alongside reports that The CW’s shows will debut new seasons in January 2020, with most of its current series returning (presumably to finish out the storylines they weren’t able to this year due to the pandemic). Superman & Lois, a new series which was slated to join the network’s lineup anyway, will follow The Flash on Tuesday evenings, while Supergirl will reportedly not return until midseason, once star Melissa Benoist returns from maternity leave. Black Lightning will stay in its current timeslot on Monday nights, and Legends of Tomorrow will also not return until mid-season. In the meantime, The CW will air newly-acquired shows this fall, including DC Universe’s cancelled Swamp Thing, to satisfy viewers appetite for new content.

As I’ve noted before, I think moving to smaller crossovers make a lot of sense, given the epic scale of Crisis. Trying to match the intensity and anticipation of that crossover with another one of similar scope would be virtually impossible, but smaller crossovers will allow the creators more opportunity to explore the corners of the newly-formed CW DCU.

The Batwoman/Superman & Lois crossover will air some time in 2021.
