The Avengers, and Honey Boo Boo are topping this year’s Halloween costumes popularity chart, say retailers, with sales generally up this year.

At Spirit Halloween in Pensacola, Manager Susan Spencer said bestselling adult costumes, meaning 15 or more sold, include superhero characters from such 2012 hits as The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers, as well as the foul-mouth stuffed bear from Ted and Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games.

Spencer said the store also was selling a lot of accessories that could be made into costumes of pop culture icons, including reality television sensation Alana Thompson from the TLC show Honey Boo Boo, pop singer Katy Perry or Nicki Minaj, Anastasia Steele from the best-selling novel 50 Shades of Grey, or characters from Adventure Time, a cable network cartoon.

About like the average aisle at Comic-Con then.

A quick check at a few costume websites reveals superheroes costumes in all sizes and genders, from young Catwoman to full grown Hulk. Of course it is never too early to get them started, as with this Batman Baby Bunting.

And if you missed last week’s South Park, “A Nightmare on Facetime,” the kids were right in on the trend, dressing as the Avengers for a take on The Shining.
