We might as well just set up a direct link to Deadline Hollywood, since they’re breaking all the news these days….

§ Although generally a lackluster film which spawned a totally lame spin-off, DAREDEVIL is getting a reboot at Fox, with David Scarpa, writer of the little-liked remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL aboard as writer. Sounds like a winner, right? But Fox will be the winner because they need to make a Daredevil movie or else…Disney will get Matt Murdock! As long as Marvel’s movie properties are in development at the studios where they last landed, they will not revert to Disney/Marvel. This is pretty much true of all of Marvel’s already-made movie stars: Hulk at Uni, the X-verse and the FF at Fox, and so on. It’s really a race against time though, because one of these days one of these studios is going to slip up and let Lexi Alexander make another Marvel movie, and The Mouse will be there to scoop up the remains. It’s like Crank set at a movie studio.

§ David Goyer has left Flash Forward as show runner, Deadline reports. The similarly comics-connected Marc Guggenheim left earlier.

§ ALSO, that COWBOYS & ALIENS movie IS going to be made and released on July 29, 2011. Jon Favreau directs Daniel Craig stars.

§ Geoff Boucher has a very informative (and spoiler filled) interview with CAPTAIN AMERICA director Joe Johnston who reveals that his Cap will be in…the USO.

“So he’s up on stage doing songs and dances with chorus girls and he can’t wait to get out and really fight. When he does go AWOL, he covers up the suit but then, after a few things happen, he realizes that this uniform allows him to lead. By then, he’s become a star in the public mind and a symbol. The guys get behind him because he embodies something special.”

§ Toy movies: TWILIGHT heartthrob Taylor Lautner has been cast as STRETCH ARMSTRONG, because he looks so flexible. Yet only a lad of 18, Lautner is being groomed to be the action star of the future, according to the trades, and there is already a blog called Taylor Lautner Shirtless, so he’s well on his way.

  1. Stretch Armstrong? What next, Slime? Don’t Break The Ice? Rockem Sockem Robots? (ooohhh…)

    “A Captain American in Paris”?
As for Capt. America, maybe we’ll see some singing and dancing along with the action. Kinda what Bollywood does… something for everyone. Even a mushy love story. But… what about Bucky? Will the whisper campaign about a guy who sings and dances while “real men” shed blood on the battlefields affect Steve and Bucky?

  2. “So he’s up on stage doing songs and dances with chorus girls and he can’t wait to get out and really fight. Falls squarely into the “pissing on it to make it mine” school of adaptation.

  3. I’m wondering how Fox benefits by keeping the rights, even if they don’t intend to actually make a DAREDEVIL movie. Making movies isn’t a zero sum game. Would losing the rights hurt Fox’s balance sheet?

  4. David Scarpa was also the sceenwriter for the “The Last Castle” not exactly Academy Award material but not a bad movie. At least it was trying to at least be about something instead of the usual summer movie fair.

  5. Sometimes writers take the “write what you know” concept way too far. Can’t relate to a super soldier? Make him a Hollywood phoney instead. As long as he has a costume people will know who he is.

  6. “This is pretty much true of all of Marvel’s already-made movie stars: Hulk at Uni…”

Actually, the Hulk isn’t “at Uni”; Marvel Studios, not Universal, made the Edward Norton INCREDIBLE HULK film, which *was* distributed by Universal. Saying “Hulk at Uni” would be like saying “Iron Man at Paramount.”

  7. as long as they even have some sort of production for a film. fox keeps the rights for they have to at least be in pre production otherwise they do not make a film with the character the rights go back to Disney and given that fox has most of Marvels big guns. they would lose big money if Disney got the rights back. as for David Goyer leaving flash forward no doubt the old creative differances and execs interfering again.

  8. Yeah, I know about this when I frist read about it and the whole merger. While it’s nice to see things set in motion, I am cautious about bad, fast cranked out movies due to this and, well, comic book movies suffering, in general.

  9. “…this approach, it’s the only way we could justify ever seeing him on a screen in tights, with the funny boots and everything. ”

Ok, then, it’s official … Joe Johnston probably shouldn’t be directing Captain America.

  10. I wonder how many directors have, like Johnston, come right out and said about a comic book character, “In real life, that costume would look stupid.” Among the various reasons why the general public has trouble getting into superhero comics, the costumes might be one of them.

When people feel the need to construct an elaborate rationale for why a hero wears a costume, there’s obviously a problem — but without the costume, Cap’s just another soldier. There was nothing said in the article about the shield. . . Another reason why Cap and heroes in general shouldn’t carry guns is that the gun detracts from whatever powers the hero has. No one needs a power to kill someone, using a gun. It remains to be seen how much hand-to-hand combat there is in the film.
