I don’t have a lot to offer in terms of introductions to today’s edition of Studio Coffee Run, as it seems like Hollywood has been taking a nice break in the week between Downton Abbey and Joker. There’s been other stuff going on in the world—and of course, Abominable opens today–but not so much related to the world of entertainment, especially in New York, which has the New York Film Festival starting today and New York Comic-Con starting next week. So let’s get right into today’s edition.

In Case You Missed It…

Dern, Goldblum and Neill back for more Jurassic stuff!

Fans of Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park—  even those that hate filmmaker Colin Trevorrow for being another white man in Hollywood to fail upwards – were pretty psyched to hear that he’s figured out a way to bring back the characters played by Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill for 2021’s Jurassic World 3in “major roles.” It will be the first time those three characters will have been on screen together since the original movie in 1993.

Kevin Feige developing a Star Wars movie!

Another one of those late-night developments this week was the news that Marvel Studios Prez and mastermind Kevin Feige is being given the keys to the Lucasfilm world of “Star Wars,” as he becomes the next filmmaker to develop a movie within that world. There’s almost zero information about it other than the fact that he’s been given Carte Blanche by Disney and Lucasfilm to play in a world of which we already know he’s a fan. He’ll be working closely with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy to make that happen, but who knows if it will be one of the movies already on the schedule between now and 2027.

But onto other entertainment news…

Jason Bateman may direct Ryan Reynolds’ CLUE for Disney/Fox

Clue
Netflix/Parker Bros.

I’ll let the above title sink in for a bit, since there’s a lot to digest. Disney/Fox are making a new movie based on the Parker Bros. board game Clue– as opposed to outright remaking the existing 1985 movie. Not only will it be written by Deadpooland Zombieland 2 screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and they will be reuniting with Ryan Reynolds for the movie. It now looks like recent Emmy winner Jason Bateman(Ozark) is in talks to direct the movie, which should be Bateman’s return to comedy after delving into drama for the past couple years. Some may remember that his feature film directorial debut Bad Words was a dark comedy, and if he gets the gig, he should be an interesting match with Reynolds… not to mention the presumably large cast he assembles around him. The question now is whether Reynolds will play Colonel Mustard, Professor Plum or Mr. Green…

ZOMBIELAND 2: DOUBLE TAP Character Posters

Zombieland
Sony Pictures

Because I like tying all aspects of my Studios Coffee Runs with a nicely-tied bow, we go from a project written by Reese and Wernick to the sequel to the project that first got them recognized in Hollywood, Zombieland 2: Double Tap!  The movie opens on October 18, and Sony Pictures released new character posters for the movie in which the characters played by Woody Harrelson, Jesse EisenbergEmma Stone and Abigail Breslin are joined by new characters played by Zoey DeutchRosario Dawson and more.

James Wan’s new horror movie has a MALIGNANT title!

Malignant
James Wan

You may remember that I’ve mentioned a new horror movie being directed by James Wanin California with the odd working title of “Silvercup,” with Maddie Hasson recently joining the cast. That movie now has a title – Malignant– and Wan just began filming on it earlier this week. That’s about all we know, except that it definitely sounds like it will be in the vein of Insidious, at least in terms of having an adjective for a title.

Casting Tidbits…

Jodie Comer
BBC America

Mere days after winning an Emmy, Killing Eve star Jodie Comer has been attached to star in Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel, a 14th Century France #MeToo revenge story that already has Matt Damon and Ben Affleck attached to star.  The movie is about a man who goes to war at which time his friend rapes his wife (Comer’s role), although no one believes her until the soldier appeals to the king of France to allow the two men to duel to the death. It would end up being… you guessed it… the last legally-sanctioned duel in France. (All that stuff that happens in Hamilton takes place during America’s more anarchic days.)  The movie won’t actually start filming until 2020, so Scott has time to direct one of those other three “Alien” movies he keeps threatening to make

A bit of “producer casting” with the recent news that Logan and FoX-Men franchise producer Hutch Parkerhas tied his caravan to Sony Pictures’ Venom 2, directed by Andy Serkis.

Trailers! Trailers! Trailers!*

(*Okay, truth in advertising: Just two trailers this week.)

As you read this, I’ll be about a half hour into watching Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman as it premieres at the New York Film Festival, and Netflix was nice enough to release a new trailer for the crime-drama starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci just to get me that much more excited. (My review will be posted here on The Beat later tonight.)

The Apple TV+ line-up seems to be shaping itself up nicely for the Nov. 1 debut of the streaming service, and today, we got the first trailer for the sci-fi series For All Mankind, the new show from Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek), starring Joel Kinnaman, Michael Dorman, Sarah Jones, Shantel VanSanten, and more. It looks to take place in an alternate reality where Russia landed on the Moon first.

That’s it for my weekly dollop of Studio Coffee Run. Josh will be back on Tuesday, and thenand I should be back next Friday, as the Beat wades knee-deep into this year’s New York Comic-Con.
