Almost thirty years since the trio of Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum starred in Steven Spielberg‘s ground-breaking blockbuster Jurassic Park, the three actors will be reuniting on the screen for Colin Trevorrow‘s Jurassic World 3.
It was announced last night through a number of well-timed seemingly-simultaneous events, one of them being a Collider IMAX screening of 2015’s Jurassic World with director Trevorrow appearing in person, where he announced the return of the three actors in “major roles”, bringing Dern out to confirm that she would indeed be back for more than just a cameo, telling the audience:
“I love dinosaurs, I love that you love them like we do, and if it’s not asking too much, if I’m going to get to join this party again I would hate to not bring my friends Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum with me. Is that ok with you?”
This is already a pretty big year for Dern with the return of Big Little Lies to HBO for a second season, two years after Dern won an Emmy for her role on the mini-series. There’s also more Oscar buzz swirling around Dern’s supporting role in Noah Baumbach‘s Marriage Story, which will play at the New York Film Festival in two weeks after playing various other festivals. Dern will be returning to the role of Dr. Ellie Sattler that she hasn’t played since the original Jurassic Park.
Jeff Goldblum made a brief cameo in 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom as chaos theory specialist Dr. Ian Malcolm, his first appearance in the series since the 1997 sequel The Lost World. Sam Neill’s paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant didn’t appear in that sequel (or the book it was based on) but returned for Jurassic Park 3, which was not directed by Spielberg.
The three actors reappearing in Jurassic World 3, currently scheduled for June 11, 2021, will indeed be the first time their characters have appeared together on screen since that very first movie.
