According to reports from Variety, Disney has pushed back the release date for Episode 8 by six months, moving the original release date of May 26, 2017 to Dec. 15, 2017. The report comes just a day after rumors swirled around that the original script was undergoing a final rewrite, potentially to account for the popularity of characters introduced in The Force Awakens.
This release date will also change the landscape of Episode 8’s competition. A May release date would have seen the film up against Guardians of the Galaxy 2, while a December release runs right up against the currently scheduled release for Avatar 2.
Director Rian Johnson took to Twitter shortly after the news broke to share a little bit of holiday cheer for the revised release date:

So apparently they’ve found that a December release date works pretty well, financially?
