After I finished talking to James Wyatt and the Wizards of the Coast PR folks about their new World of Warcraft release, they surprised me with some talk about their upcoming Star Wars D&D campaign, which is scheduled to be released next year on the 50th anniversary of Star Wars. While there wasn’t a ton of information, here’s a bit of a preview of what to expect for this upcoming new campaign that sounds exciting for Star Wars and D&D fans alike.

WotC PR: At Gen Con, we announced our full lineup for 2027, part of which was a Star Wars collaboration.

Lytle: [Chuckles]. Oh, y’all gonna make mad money. So where does this take place – pre or post Battle of Yavin?

WotC PR: [Laughing]. So, in that part, what we’re doing is we’re working to have the same timeline as the original trilogy. So while Luke and Leia are off part of the galaxy, saving the galaxy from Sith Lords, the other part of the galaxy still needs to be taken care of and has some missions that this crew is going to talk about. There’s going to be two books. One is going to be a core book, so similar to what we have for World of Warcraft, a player’s handbook, but that is Star Wars-specific. And then we’re also doing an adventure.

Lytle: This actually opens up a whole ton of possibilities that are interesting to those who aren’t die-hard Star Wars fans.

WotC: So what we’re unveiling is the cover for our adventure, which is Tyro Squadron. This is just a group of folks who are, as you might imagine, the scoundrels, the little-known people who needed to take care of missions that will benefit the war against the Empire.

Lytle: Like Cassian Andor and the characters in the Andor show.

[James Wyatt nods]

WotC PR: But so that’s the cover that we’re announcing. Then we have some concept art, some sneaky things you can do with potential stormtroopers. Then you have, like, our action sequences and the Tyro Squadron’s ship that will take you around the portion of the galaxy. So for the D&D, we have our core books like World of Warcraft one, and what people also clamor towards are adventures that are story arcs of what you and your adventurers can do, and granted, those can often, much like the movie, take a very wide left and have an opportunity to play through something within that timeline.

Lytle: Will there be an opportunity to do some of the Force stuff and lightsabers and such?

WotC PR: We’re going to go to Star Wars Celebration next year, where we’re going to show people what Tyro Squadron can do with an actual play. So similar to what we were talking about with the Dungeon Masters show for WoW, we’re going to have an actual play at Star Wars Celebration going through some of the mission.

James Wyatt: So this book represents sort of a first step towards what we’re doing with Star Wars and a product line that we’re calling Universes Beyond. Basically, D&D is a rules engine that you can use to play in any world you can imagine, so that you’re making your own world or playing in the Forgotten Realms or playing in World of Warcraft or playing in Star Wars.

Lytle: This feels very much like what your sister brand Magic: The Gathering is doing with its Universes Beyond push.

James Wyatt: Yes.
