The popular black symbiote suit makes its return in Marvel’s latest BLACK, WHITE, & BLOOD anthology series. The series has featured quite the popular and ever-so-violent one-off stories including some ones about Wolverine, Deadpool, Moon Knight, and even Darth Vader. Now it’s Spider-Man’s turn for his 40th anniversary of the black suit costume with SPIDER-MAN: BLACK SUIT & BLOOD. You can check out the cover by Leinil Francis Yu below plus more soon-to-reveal variants will all be available in August.

As to what you’ll find in this issue:

  • J.M. DeMatteis returns to his masterpiece “Kraven’s Last Hunt” alongside Elena Casagrande with an unforgiving story that sheds new light on an iconic scene.
  • J. Michael Straczynski and artist Sumit Kumar in his Marvel Comics debut rips Peter Parker’s (and the symbiote’s) heart out! A last vestige of the symbiote has stayed with Peter all these years, waiting for the right moment to tear Spidey down!
  • Dustin Nguyen writes and draws a spine-chilling tale of Spider-Man being HUNTED. But how can he hope to escape when the danger comes from within?

It’s poetic timing for Marvel right now given that it’s the 40th anniversary of the suit. Which by all means, was a major event in comics history. What’s complicated then, is that it happens to coincide its release with what Marvel’s doing in one of their more violent summer events already with  BLOOD HUNT, so those black and red color palates are already playing a major aesthetic role to the brand this summer as it’s meant to be one of the more horror-centric moments in Marvel.

Doing “Kraven’s Last Hunt” is a good idea for the inevitable Kraven movie meant to come out at the end of the year. Readers also can’t deny a JMS Spider-Man story with a brand new artist in Sumit Kumar is a great way to introduce talent to new readers. What’s strange then about the timing of this then is that both the symbiote suit and Kraven are heavy features within the Spider-Man 2 video game.

I can’t help but wonder if there was a different release order in mind for these things as they’re all awfully close to one another in schedule. Though I have been told often, from folks at Marvel no-less, that they’re less co-ordinated in timing between verticals than you think (though you couldn’t tell that when looking at everything launching with Deadpool right now between movie and comics line).

Marvel’s popular Black, White & Blood imprint allows the industry’s hottest creators to channel the full ferocity of Marvel’s deadliest characters! Over the last few years, fans have witnessed Wolverine, Deadpool, Moon Knight, Darth Vader, and more unleashed in their own Black, White & Blood series. Now, it’s Spidey’s turn to get bloody! This August, return to Spider-Man’s darkest era in SPIDER-MAN: BLACK SUIT & BLOOD.

The new series sees all-star creators, including some Spidey storytelling legends, honor the 40th Anniversary of Spider-Man’s black costume “black, white & blood” style! Some will reveal never-before-told tales set during the Spidey’s Black Suit era while others explore the costume’s legacy and its impact on Peter.
