In what turned out to be a platform for diversity and inclusion in comics, Skybound Xpo Day One not only ended with Chance Ellison qualifying for Movie Trivia Schmoedown’s semifinals but also with the reveal of multiple website-only exclusives. Day Two of this digital convention followed a similar schedule but raised the bar of announcements with a new Summoners War: Legacy comic.
First up, Skybound plugged the new horror series Stillwater, scheduled to release on September 16. Writer Chip Zdarsky (The White Trees, Daredevil, Sex Criminals) and artist Ramón K Pérez (Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand, Jane) discussed ideas and inspiration behind this comic series with a major chunk revolving around small town secrets.
Excellence, another series by Skybound, returned to the spotlight. Created entirely by creators of color, this action-fantasy series released in May 2019. Artist Khary Randolph wished these books existed while he was growing up. “If I was 13, I would have lost my mind,” he said during the panel. Excellence #9 will hit the stands on August 12, 2020. Writer Brandon Thomas called this the “best action yet.”
Next, Peter Santa-Maria a.k.a Attack Peter demonstrated the making of “Takoro vs Akukame” Nepalese lokta block print. You can purchase it for $80 here! Peter also shared that there are only 10 framed prints of “Akukame” available on the store.
Later in the day, the Cyanide & Happiness team announced expansions to its game Trial by Trolley, that will be revealed at Gen Con on July 31. Both the Cyanide and Skybound teams played a simulator version of Trial by Trolley, again raising questions about a possible simulator available to the public in times of lockdowns and self-quarantines.
During the Xpo intermission, Skybound dropped a trailer for Slime Rancher Deluxe, and confirmed restocking of Skullgirls 2nd Encore physical edition for a limited time online.
The Xpo ended with Robert Kirkman teasing Fire Power #13, and said he thinks that Jackie Chan should portray Wei Lun if the series ever gets adapted into a movie!
