At Saturday’s “DC’s Metropolis and Beyond” panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the publisher announced that John Henry Irons, the Black superhero with the longest-running ongoing series in DC’s mainline continuity, will return in a brand new ongoing series written by Morgan Hampton (Cyborg, Green Lantern Corps).
This marks Steel’s first ongoing solo series in nearly 30 years, following the conclusion of his original 52-issue run in 1998. The last mini-series to feature the character was Steelworks (2023), which was six issues written by Michael Dorn, best known for playing Worf in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
The announcement of Hampton’s steel ongoing follows Friday’s announcements about DC’s first-ever Vixen ongoing, written by Stephanie Williams and illustrated by Khary Randolph, and a new Static ongoing, written by Cody Ziglar and illustrated by Diego Olortegui.
In an Instagram post on Saturday, Williams posted art of Marilyn Moonlight captioned, “So more on this soon, but I’m bringing my talents to Metropolis like the homie @moellennial [Hampton].” DC has not announced anything official regarding this teaser at time of writing.
