It’s time to return to the Unknown. Dark Horse Comics has announced Art of Over the Garden Wall: Expanded Edition to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the original book, and writer Sean Edgar and series art director Nick Cross will be making an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 to celebrate.
Written by Edgar, Art of Over the Garden Wall: Expanded Edition features developmental material, concept art, and illustrations from creator and showrunner Patrick McHale and the show’s creative team. The newly designed and updated edition adds more than 30 pages to the original 2017 release, including:
- A new chapter of cast and crew interviews featuring Elijah Wood, Melanie Lynskey, and Collin Dean
- Artwork from the BOOM! Studios comics series
- Concept designs for Mondo’s collectible figures
- Photography and preproduction art from a range of products honoring the show’s legacy that have been released since 2017
Art of Over the Garden Wall: Expanded Edition also features brand new covers by Cross for the standard and deluxe versions (seen below), and a new foreword by Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch.
“It’s finally back in print!” said McHale of the new edition, which marks the 10th anniversary of the original book’s release. “I’m so happy people will soon be able to get their mitts on this book again, now in its new expanded form!”
“Revisiting the Unknown and all of the lives it’s touched—from the folks at Aardman to Elijah, Melanie, and Collin—has been a delight,” added Edgar. “Pat’s created a masterpiece for the decades. We’ll see you all in another 10 years when we have long beards and lanterns of our own!”
Art of Over the Garden Wall: Expanded Edition will be released in standard ($54.99) and deluxe ($109.99) hardcover editions, with the latter including a foil treated cover, gilded pages, and a ribbon bookmark. Both editions will be available in bookstores and comic shops on February 9, 2027 and are available for pre-order now.
