The Time Variance Authority is under new management! This December, behold the adventures of the agency tasked with upholding the timestream in TVA! Just announced by Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige and Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski at the Marvel Fanfare Panel at San Diego Comic-Con, TVA will be a five-issue limited comic book series written by Marvel Studios’ Loki writer Katharyn Blair and drawn by acclaimed Marvel artist Pere Perez (Carnage, Edge of Spider-Verse).
The series will represent an evolution for the Marvel Comics’ version of the TVA as its blended with its Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart, as depicted in the Disney+ series Loki series and Deadpool & Wolverine. The series will mark the Marvel Comics debut of various MCU characters, including breakout Loki star Miss Minutes. The mysterious all-knowing entity who keeps the TVA ticking like clockwork will recruit a new band of heroes charged with monitoring and regulating all realities and timelines.
Join Ghost-Spider and other universe-displaced entities including Captain Cater, a heartbroken Remy Lebeau, and more as they’re sent throughout the multiverse on vital missions to repair wild temporal anomalies and keep reality itself from shattering!
“I love this idea,” shared Feige. “It’s just as cool for us to see our work in comics as it is to bring the work of comic book creators to the big screen.”
If that’s not all here’s a bit of transcript of what what happened at the panel itself written by Beau Q.
To begin, C.B. Cebulski and Kevin Feige bring up their fandom origin stories including how C.B. first met Stan Lee at LA’s best chili dog place Carneys to order some chili dogs. In comparison, Feige first met Stan on set when every staffer left to get comics for Stan to sign.
At this point, Kevin Feige’s first film was 90’s action movie called Volcano starring Tommy Lee Jones [who referred to the film as a stinker].
CB queries about Feiges collecting proclivity, to which Feige re-torted “It’s an illness”. As you can see, Feige was an avant collector of Playmates Star Wars toys. They even showcased Part of Feige’s newest collection from the lobby of Marvel Studios.
Now CB shows his SDCC memories– photo bombing Chris Evans among them.
He also brings out the Marvel Universe 1-12 cover that lists all Marvel characters alphabetically from top left to bottom right. CB won’t say, but there’s one Marvel character removed from the poster for legal reasons !!
At this point, CB brings up an anecdotal quote about all the Marvel characters as “there is no bad characters– just those not written well yet.” CB then leads Feige to a fun exercise of viewing an iconic comic cover and how the scenes are presented in the films.
Iron Man first appearance from Tales of Suspense followed by the first suited scene from Iron Man (The audio for these clips are FAR TOO LOUD and fans are mildly upset between clips)
2. Capt America punching Hitler cover followed by the Capt America punching Hitler montage from Captain America 1.
3. Cap vs Tony shield bashing sequence from Civil War followed by the finale fight from Capt AM Civil War
4. Thanos snapping his fingers from Infinity War followed by the scene of Thanos finally assembling the Infinity Gauntlet and SNAP
Next, C.B. refers to relationship with Marvel Studios and Marvel Comics as a regulatory system that informs each other as it evolves. Marvel’s 2024 slate shown as Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding and Adi Granov are brought out.
Granov’s reveals their favorite artist growing up was Moebius and Moebius’ Elektra poster was a huge inspiration. Ryan Meinerding meanwhile, a graphic illustrator by trade, was inspired by classic Stan/Jack F4 and Spidey towels. He’s also behind the Norman Rockwell styled F4 MCU posters that hit social.
C.B. celebrates Granov for being behind the iconic 3 point superhero pose. How Granov’s Iron Man Extremis was one of the most important inspirations for the MCU. Going back to MCU influencing the books, C.B. brings up Coulson, Darcy, Alligator Loki, and Miss Minutes as examples. Revealing Sir Seconds and Miss Minutes as part of the Marvel TVA comic.
The comic will feature Loki TV show characters prominently with art by Pepe Larraz. CB then pivots to F4 promo and shows off 5 classic F4 covers before the giant Q and A with fans occured.
Overall: CB and Feige found multiple ways to promote the MCU/Marvel Publishing relationship as constantly influencing one another, which would make their relationship an echo chamber at worst.
CB, a fan of Easter eggs, also found ways to seed some hints throughout the proceeding: an Elektra Moebius poster in his old photos, Ramos’ Feige drawing wearing a F4 pin, and Feige’s Thunderbolts ball cap.
