Some try to steal money, some like jewels or cars. Others go big, like stealing a planet. That is what conman Glane Breld is plotting with his new gang of thieves. In Heist, or How to Steal a Planet #1, the planet Heist is the target and only the most cunning criminals can pull off a stunt this big.

Written by Eisner-winner Paul Tobin (Bandette, Plants Vs. Zombies) and illustrated by artist Arjuna Susini (Made Men, The Replacer), the science fiction tale has been described as “Ocean’s Eleven in space.” Colorist Vittorio Astone (These Savage Shores), letterer Saida Temofonte (Livewire), and designer Tim Daniel round out the creative team.

The action begins right in the first panel, with assassins attempting to kill Breld. He’s too good for them, dodging their blades and outsmarting them at every turn. Once a conman always a conman because being fresh out of jail and free again doesn’t stop him from planning his next mark. In between attempts on his life, he’s trying to build himself a crew for his next big job, and his choices are quite ambitious.

But it goes deeper for Breld. Turns out what he thought was his big payday made him the victim of a double cross frame job that landed him behind bars. That is why the mark is so huge—a literal planet—because it’s payback time.

Heist is a fun read. There’s action, witty dialogue, plenty of scifi elements, and a solid plot to give the story and its roguish protagonist enough weight to keep you interested. The art and color palette work well to create the futuristic tale, and even panels crowded with aliens, scenery, and assassins trying to kill Breld are detailed and interesting. Tobin’s pacing is also spot on, and the comic never drags, even when you are getting loads of backstory about who everyone is and how we got here. Breld is a likable scoundrel, and I’m interested to learn more about him as the series progresses.

Issue #1 of Heist, or How to Steal a Planet is due to hit comic shops on November 6. Readers can also look for a Vault Vintage B cover by Nathan Gooden and Tim Daniel, featuring an homage to the cover of Love and Rockets #1. Keep checking Vault’s website for more info.
