As physical events prepare to make their return after the last year’s pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the question of what will happen to the online events and activities that popped up to fill the void has lingered. Today event organizer ReedPOP announced an extension of their virtual Metaverse events in the form of Metaverse Memberships, a paid service that will offer subscribers exclusive access to events both digital and physical.
Metaverse Memberships come in two tiers, a $65-a-year ‘Fan’ level and a $99-a-year ‘Superfan’ level. Both tiers include “Digital Event Tickets” to ReedPOP events including New York Comic Con, Emerald City Comic Con, MCM London, and C2E2, as well as access to Celebrity Digital Panels, held quarterly, and first access to purchase tickets for other digital events. The ‘Superfan’ level, which will be available in unspecified limited quantities, also includes presale access for live event tickets, and first access to purchase live event photo ops & autographs, and to buy exclusive merch.
While it’s not outright stated, the implication of the Metaverse Memberships is that, going forward, ReedPOP’s virtual events will be paid affairs, no longer free to anyone with internet access. Metaverse events have offered paid experiences in the past, including celebrity meet-and-greets, personalized videos, and autographs, though access to panels has been free. The pivot to paid events is a move that makes sense for the company and its parent, Reed Exhibitions, which saw its revenue fall by a massive 71% in just the first half of 2020.
