Dynamite Comics has had quite a summer celebrating the 50th anniversary of their flagship character, Vampirella. One of their biggest announcements this year was a new ongoing Vampi series from writer Christopher Priest and artist Ergün Gündüz, which broke records before the first issue even released. Now, Vampirella #1 is in the top 10 in sales and #11 in units, according to Diamond Comics Distributors’ public rankings for the best-selling comic books and graphic novels for July 2019.

This new series is also Dynamite’s best-selling full priced comic book of all time, which perfectly coincides with the publisher’s 15th anniversary. Overall, the book’s print run numbers exceed 130,000 units.

The buzz around Priest’s run on the Daughter of Drakulon has been impressive and after the first issue’s release, fans, retailers, and critics have had nothing but praise for the writer’s new take on the iconic character. Comic shops reportedly sold out of the issue as well as other Vampi items that Dynamite released this summer.

Editor Matt Idelson shared, “It’s incredibly gratifying to see how well the creative team has meshed and how, in response, the audience has reacted. They deserve all the eyes in the world seeing their work, and I couldn’t be happier for them. We all felt the pressure to deliver something special for Vampi’s big deal anniversary, and I think the job got done pretty well!”

“Seeing the numbers come in was a very satisfying experience and we couldn’t be happier. Ultimately though, it is all about the creative content and those who worked hard to make it as best it can be and then make sure fans knew about it,” said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. “Top to bottom this was a team effort by Christopher Priest, Ergün Gündüz, the entire Dynamite family and the retailers and fans who supported us so well! The most important part is delivering a memorable and engaging Vampirella story that fans and retailers will be excited to read every month and add to their collections. The goal now is to make sure issues two and up are just as exciting!”

Priest and Gündüz are set to continue on the series for a full year or longer. Issue #2 will feature a cover by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, and other top artists like J. Scott Campbell and Terry Dodson are set for future covers. Issue #2 also starts Dynamite’s fan art spotlight following their recent contest.
