This comic will hit shelves with a bang. Scout Comics just released info about Volume, a 4-issue mini-series created by writer Christof Bogacs (Corpus: An Anthology of Bodily Ailments, The XCT: Most Wanted, 24 Panels), artist Skylar Patridge (Crowded) and editor Nadia Shammas (Corpus: An Anthology of Bodily Ailments). The series follows 16 year-old Essa living through a near-future populist dictatorship known as The Regime that has made music illegal. The Regime preaches that “PEACE IS QUIET” and Essa is fed up with living in such a bland, colorless, silent world. Her weapon against the government? One killer rock song.
“Volume has been rattling around in my head for a while now. This is me venting all my pent-up teenage rage in an immature display of punching, explosions and song lyrics,” said Bogacs in a statement. “The best part is I get to pull Skye and Nadia into the fray with me … and now Scout [Comics] as well! As a fan of books like Long Lost and Heavenly Blues, I couldn’t be more excited to be working with Scout to bring this punk-drenched power-fantasy to life.”
Patridge added, “Volume is a really special story, not only in its message but also in its execution. We wanted to create a world devoid of color, stifled by the confines of conformity — then smash it with color and punk music. It’s a story of youth, identity and reluctant rebellion in the face of authoritarianism.”
Shammas said, “Volume is a story that encapsulates the way teen girls are silenced and undervalued, and the way their voices are louder than ever.”
In addition to writing by Bogacs and art by Patridge, Volume features lettering by Bram Meehan and colors by Rebecca Nalty. The series is slated to premiere later this year; you can sign up for the newsletter for updates.
